Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

I love the free sport classes. Just check out the timetable on the we site of the esplanade. The toilets are clean. the water in the lagoon seems to be clean, too.

The Esplanade walk pool is excellent to cool off (a bit too cool today as there was not too much direct sun perhaps. Cloudy and a bit overcast. Still lots of kids having a splash and enjoying it. My best effort was getting up to...More

Well you can't really swim at the beach. Life guards from 9am to 5pm I think, showers, change rooms, not much shade, water clean

A great area in the centre of Cairns, a credit to the forward thinking of the local council. Very relaxing area just across the road from the main shops.

The water is like an icicle but you get use to in on a sunny hot day in June! Great location and atmosphere!

As I was looking for a place to do a few laps prior to ironman, i dared to get into the lagoon early morning Very pleasant Yet it is probably most optimal for families with young kids Happy days!

A beautiful setting right in Cairns, on the esplanade, opposite a whole range of eateries and restaurants, shady trees and all amenities. The pool itself is filled with sea water that comes right up to the esplanade. People strolling, running, sun baking, relaxing, eating in...More

Hi there - thanks very much for your review of the Cairns swimming lagoon. My wife & I will be there in less than 2 weeks & I was wondering if this facility is suitable for lap swimming in say, the early morning or late evening before closing. Thank you! CB

In June the beaches are safe as there's no stingers. Tobruk public pool is a few kms north of the lagoon. Crystal cascades is a lovely spot to swim but probably a bit cool on June.
