In the heart of Hobart's colourful dock precinct, you will embark on an exclusively Tasmanian wine experience at the Gasworks Cellar Door.

With 16 Tasmanian wines always on tasting, a knowledgeable wine expert to guide you through the ever-changing labels, a stylish interior design, and fascinating information about the island's wines and history- this is no ordinary tasting experience.

With its sandstone facade and tall brick chimney, it's clear that the Gasworks complex has an industrial past. The cylindrical gasometer tank that once stored coal-gas is gone, but this is the place where coal was burned to generate the gas that lit the streets of Hobart. The Cellar Door itself is located in the original Gasworks head office, where high ceilings, polished Tasmanian oak floors and a sweeping timber staircase reflect the importance of the enterprise from the late 1850s.

How it works:-

Your guide will introduce each wine in detail, talking about the region, the climate and the winemaking techniques that create each one's special character.

To taste your way around the Gasworks Cellar Door, you purchase a tasting card for $10.

There are three cards

•12 wines (20ml each)

•6 wines (40ml each) or,

•3 wines (80ml each)

The 12-wine card gives you the widest options; while the 3-wines card lets you savour a trio of your choice.

This was a good tasting and the girl was very knowledgeable but it lacked personality. It was a very sterile environment. I could have been in a doctor's surgery. Where were the quirky wall hangings, some music, interesting pictures or at least a view. Most wineries are beautiful. This lacked all these things. Where was the service!!!! The wines were... More

This is a great idea for those who missed the vineyards along the way in Tassie. Located within walking distance to waterfront in Hobart, and not hard to find. They advertise 300 wines but they only have 16 at one time to taste, which is disappointing and they might not be the ones you want to taste, but I can... More

Hello Jacqui, Thanks for visiting us and we appreciate your comments. It is a pretty fun experience and we like to think that it really is one of the best places where you can try so many different wines in one cellar door experience that represent everyone equally; from small to big, from some identifiable regulars in their latest vintage... Excellent tasting of wine!! Daniella is an expert in her field and gave great knowledge of the wines available. All from an unbiased point of view as it isn't a winery! Spent nearly an hour tasting wine, shown on a map where each comes from, how it's made etc. Also the machines (you'll know if you visit) are AWESOME!!! Highly... More

Hi Matthew, You are 100% right; Daniella is gold! I've never worked with someone so passionate and detailed like Daniella; she knows her Tassie wines and if she doesn't she will find out for you. We are very grateful for your kind comments about Dan's and our Enomatic wine machines. Our wines are always fresh and they are changed to... More

We spent some time at Gasworks this afternoon with Daniella. She was fantastic! She took the time to explain to us the nuances of the different regions and characteristics of Tasmanian Red &White wines. I can't recommend her professionalism and Gasworks highly enough!

Welcoming shop floor and knowledgeable staff. We found this to be a great experience, the wine was well explained and presented in excellent conditions (great taste, perfect temp and all round wonderful). Will definitely be visiting the online store with free delivery for 6 bottles or more - a great intro for us to Tasmanian wine 🍷👌🏼

We've travelled far & wide & done our fair share of wineries so with a little experience under our belts have no hesitation in recommending this place. Daniella, our hostess was a wealth of knowledge & we loved her down to earth approach. We found out so much more than we expected, true knowledge of how the various coastlines influence... More

We were a little bummed when the wine tour we had booked switched to a whisky tasting tour. We only had one day left in Tasmania and I saw this place in a hotel booklet. It isn't like other wine tasting places in other cities we visited where you pay so much on a card and then go up to... More

The Gasworks Cellar Door is a short walk from my Hotel in the heart of Hobart's Dock Precinct. An excellent exhibit of Tasmania's wines with informative commentary on the walls. A tasting menu is available which I tried. However space constraints precluded me from buying a bottle or two to take back to Sydney.
