Overview

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas - the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre. Since that time we've grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the world, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton's cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema. With our exclusive seasons we've brought Melbournians their only chance to see on the big screen films such as Ex Machina, Snowpiercer, Mud, The Witch, Cabin in the Woods, Margaret, Weekend, Citizenfour, Winter Sleep, Under the Skin, The Bling Ring, I Am Eleven, and of course Lygon Street: Si Parlo Italiano. Cinema Nova was among the first cinemas in the country to start screening stage productions from around the world, and we now draw thousands to see the Met Opera and London's National Theatre from the comfort of our theatres. Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event. From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

In its heyday cinema, Nova was plush, BUT it has become uncared for and tired looking. I feel disappointed in the appearance of the cinema and feel disgusted by the unhygienic presence of mice during a session. It only makes me wonder how unsanitary the...More

Very comfortable compact cinemas with a collection of movies that differ from the big cinemas. Surrounded by many top places to eat.

I've been here several times and it's always been great. They have a big selection of films to choose from and it's easy to get to on a #1 or #6 tram from the cbd. Buy your ticket downstairs first.Brunetti's restaurant is very close for...More

This cinema is a bit of a rabbit warren. The selection of films is excellent and extensive, with prices particularly cheap on a Monday. There can be long queues at the box office, particularly during school holidays. A better option is booking on line. The...More

Great cinemas with an intimate feel, playing a cool mix of movies. Best when you can buy your tickets online so you don't have to queue at the box office (especially when you can get allocated seating over Friday - Sunday). Very easy system to...More

This is is a great cinema showing mainly arthouse, indie and foreign language movies. Comfortable small cinemas and right in the middle of the Lygon St restaurant and cafe strip. Well worth a visit.

If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated
over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the
place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to
the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who
started their day with a local espresso. They are
gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this
Little Italy which has something for everyone.
