I picked up a free map at the tourist centre and it recommended to visit this opal shop. I think I would have gone past it if I wasn't looking for it, it's a small door leading down to a basement shop. Luckily it was quiet when I got there and a lovely young lady approached me immediately and offered... More

Thanks for the amazing review! We used to be listed as an Attraction, but Tripadvisor changed our category (sadly!). We think that we're much more than just a shop too! Thanks again - we're really grateful. More

We were very impressed with the introduction to opals- from mining to polishing to varieties and doublets, triplets and solid stones. The shop had a wonderful selection of jewelry and loose stones. If you don't see what you are looking for, ask- there are drawers full of loose stones and higher-priced ones not on display. The salesperson was knowledgeable and... More

If you have 10 minutes to spare pop in and take a look around. Nick will insist on giving you a quick tour, and he's a charming chap. Just go with the flow! We found it really interesting, though when we went into the little room of snakes, spiders and lizards that they'd found in the mines we nearly ended... More

Fascinating and passionate about their craft. The lizards that you can hold and touch are a fabulous bonus. Athica was a joy to listen to and even though we did not buy anything this time we will be back.

Walking past the door, the name caught my eye and I went down into a little basement area in the centre of Melbourne to see a room full of opals. A lovely young girl showed a small group of us how opals are discovereed, polished and mounted. Lots of interesting items for sale, over a huge variety of prices, and... More

Hi Daniel. Thank you so much for your comprehensive review. I remember you well, and thank you for your patience on what was a very hectic morning. I'm so pleased that you learned a lot from your Opal 101! We'd love to see the finished piece of jewellery if you get it made. Thanks again. More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
