A shortish lane, mostly populated by restaurants, a large number of which are Italian, but also Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese, catering for all budgets. You do get somewhat hassled by 'pullers-in' especially at the Italian restaurants. Always busy, with some street musicians to entertain you while you are eating.

Heaps of choice for cuisines in this small short lane. Plenty of various cultures and a great atmosphere. Felt very safe walking here alone at night time. Buskers really liven up the place.

Definitely the best spot in Melbourne for breakfast. Lots of choices, it's very obvious which restaurants are the most popular, some with quite a line up outside. In my experience, these have definitely been worth the wait. Great atmosphere, will be back!

So many choices! So little time! Two restaurants over two nights and too many to attack! Most are reasonably priced. Wine lists vary. But consistent!

We enjoyed eating at a few of the restaurants on this small lane. It is close to our hotel and convenient to duck into to find a good bite to eat.

Had a great coffee and breakfast on Hardware lane, so many choices just lined up in a row. No need for a reservation, but take an empty tummy!

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
