A great way to get acclimated to Melbourne. The tram provides a narrative about the city as it circles the Central Business District. It's also a good way to get around from attraction to attraction. We took it from The Queen Victoria Market to Southgate.

The free trip around the city was certainly packed on the day I was there, trams were supposed to run every 12 mins but this was not the case, waited at least 20mins the first day before giving up and walking to the Museum. But its a free way to see the sights of Melbourne. Note: the trams floor is... More

The Melbourne City Circle Tram is a great, free way to get around the Melbourne CBD. There is on-board commentary about the history of different buildings and areas you pass along the journey and the opportunity to hop on or off at these places of interest.

Fantastic service, moving people through and around the Melbourne CBD in a timely, efficient, and free capacity. The benefits are terrific with a wonderful sense of community and interaction, the ability to shop and dine without driving and parking, and no congestion. Love it.

Journeys on the Circle Tram are entirely free, which I think is a brilliant touch by Melbourne's tourism chiefs. It doesn't take that long to go round the entire loop and you can, of course, hop off whenever you spot something that you want to get a closer look at. The trams themselves, if you're into that kind of thing,... More

I just arrived in Melbourne and I wanted to go around the city and see everything. Then I heard of the FREE city circle tram. I was such a lovely little tram who goes around the city and you can get in and off the tram at many places. I had a really nice man who drove the tram. I... More

This tram (route 35) was very popular and therefore very crowded with overseas visitors. This detracted from the ability to see some of the highlights but Docklands looks attractive. It's a very good idea for visitors to have a quick tour of inner Melbourne but also very attractive because it's free.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
