fun vibrant area but expensive

This is a great people watching area that is fun to walk through especially in the evening. Restaurants are good but a little pricey. Fun shops.

We go to Lygon street to eat every time we visit Melbourne. The food is great, the service is good and it is a great place to be on F1 weekend. The atmosphere is just fantastic

Little Italy? Absolutely! You got to love the huge range of Italian Cuisine restaurants and lately, the addition of Asian, Lebanese and Malaysian Style eating. Offering outside eating is a bonus, being able to absorb the culture and just watch as the bustling and always busy public pass you buy. You haven't been to Melbourne until you experience "Little Italy"... More

Lygon Street runs the inner northern suburbs of Carlton, Carlton North, Princes Hill and Brunswick East. Lygon Street is synonymous with the Italian community of Melbourne, forming the nexus point of Little Italy. It is home to many Italian restaurants and alfresco cafés. The Italian restaurant district synonymous with Lygon Street occupies the few blocks between Victoria Street and Elgin... More

This is an interesting street to visit with a lot of Italian restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately we have tried quite a few and there are no standouts anymore. Those that we have tried have been average

Wonderful and very friendly area to walk around at night. As long as you take the time to look, you will find a reasonably priced meal. Some are very expensive.

The street itself is very nice, with this italian touch, far away from the hustle of CBD with all the asian restaurants and fast food. But it is a touristic area so the food is really expensive and not so good. It is much better to go to the restaurants in Fitzroy where the food is delicious.

Neighbourhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
