This was our first visit to this island. Impressed with the greenery on an island without soil. Government has removed all animal pests. We went on the "train" around the island which was not cheap but good commentary.

This extinct (we hope) volcano is only about 45 minutes ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Buy provisions before you go or purchase them on the ferry, as there is no shop on the island. Once there, a number of trails are available for tough or easy walks. Great areas of regenerating bush on lave flows, a small cave system and... More

This is my favorite Auckland city activity. A great day out. The 1920s baches are very interesting and it's a good 1 hr walk to the summit. Spectacular views too

Had a great day on the Rangitoto tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The hike to the top of the volcano was well worth the effort. We were amazed by the lava fields as we hadn't seen anything like it before. A tractor tows an open air carriage over dusty terrain making for quite a dirty but fun... More

Lovely ferry ride, good walk up down and around the island. Interesting geology, history and great views. Even a little beach for a swim. Go on the first ferry, return on the last and you might have time to visit Motutapu Island too.

Catch the ferry across to Rangitoto and walk to the summit. It's a volcano so a very interesting walk and amazing views, and a great spot for lunch. Don't cheat and take the ride up!

Rangitoto Island Is a volcanic island hat offers some good walking tracks. There is a Tractor pulled "train" for those that don't want to walk that takes you to the base of the summit where you can then walk up the 360 steps to the top for an excellent view of the surrounding Islands and Auckland.
