Once again, our morning began with a ferry ride though this time we were headed to Rangitoto Island, the site of another volcano. There were many places along the way that showed the evidence of a previous eruption. It was a very steep climb to the top of the volcano but the views from the top made the arduous trek... More

Beautiful place, non active volcano. There is a volcanic sand path to the top. Its slow and easy initially, but the last 40 ish meters it feels as though we were going straight up. Great workout, then a spectacular view and breeze at the top. The way up transports thru several climates, one being a jungle- hot muggy Then take... More

Nice, easy day out from Auckland without having to worry about the car! You can make you visit as short or long as you like. It's not so demanding if you're of average fitness. We got the first ferry from Auckland and were ready to come back midafternoon, we walked most of the trails.

Beautiful hiking place. I highly recommend this if you have a day and a good pair of sneakers. The lava caves were interesting the view from the top of the surrounding islands and the city were perfect.

This is a great half day excursion. The boat ride from Auckland is beautiful and the time you get to spend on an island that may only be 600 year old is worth it. One hour up and one hour down. The hike on Rangitoto is a real hike. The path is clear and easy to follow, but there are... More

Very interesting trip but make sure you book direct with Fullers and not through Viator who will charge an extra $20 for a couple

The island is all about the (now extinct) volcano which erupted from beneath the sea & created the island only 600 years ago, so for all us amateur geologists it's a treasure box ! Amazing to see how rapidly Mother Nature repoulates a totally barren, unforgiving landscape. Trees are established, providing habitats for birds & the bugs carried on the... More

Catch the ferry from downtown ferry terminal Auckland, $30 return or $20 if you book in advance and get an early bird ticket. Very reasonable! Ferry takes 20mins. There are a few options of longer walking trails on the Island but we took the most direct route up to the summit. Beautiful track, bush, volcanic rock, and some wooden board... More

It's a nice short ferry ride, with lovely easy walks to the crater top, the lava caves and other areas, doesn't take that long as it advertises. No Food place so pack some snacks and water, don't have to spend the entire day so can head back to town for good lunch if you come by the morning ferry... but... More

I did a cruise of Auckland harbour which included a short stop on Rangitoto Island. It is a volcanic Island and you can walk onto the island on the volcanic ash.
