Rangitoto is an island in Auckland bay, and I believe is a nature reserve. The ferry over takes about half an hour, and can be very windy/cold on the top deck. The island has various trails, including one to the top of the extinct volcano. Other trails wind round the coastline or into the centre. Land is volcanic rocks and... More

The hiking can be a little tough, but the view make all the effort worth it. Don't have any coffee shop or convenience store, so take some water and food because after hiking you Will be tired and starving otherwise do a picnic with this great scenery Is kinda magical

I wouldn't recommend this for people who aren't in great shape or wearing the proper shoes. The hike up is long and very steep on some areas. We enjoyed it but would only cautiously recommend.

This island is a 20 minute boat ride from Devenport. You can also go from Auckland. The island has some paved roads but also some arduous tracks. We walked on the volcanic path to Wreck bay. This took about an hour each way and although there is a path you need to be fairly fit and have suitable footwear to... More

Just a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Took the coastal track from Rangitoto wharf to Islington Bay wharf then upwards towards the summit, very good nature walk. Must bring water as there's no supply of drinking water on the island and good sturdy walking shoes due to the rugged lava surfaces.

It is a very nice natural place to visit that offers beautiful views from the summit. I would suggest taking the earliest ferry if you want to do more than the summit track and explore the island a little bit more. Also, don't forget to bring food and water.

Great ferry times so easy to get to and back. Outstanding views throughout. Take a packed lunch, plenty of liquids and yr rubbish with you go back home. A must for locals and visitors to Auckland a like!! Being locals we climb Rangi 2-3 times every year, how many people can say they've conquered a volcano after all and all... More

This is a walk for almost all age group. You need moderate fitness. Pack a picnic and head to rangitoto. You have stunning views of auckland skyline from the top. On a sunny day it's a delight.

We had a nice walk with our kids for a few hours. Got to the top, enjoyed the view, took some pictures. It was a nice family outing.
