Took the road to the lighthouse from Te Araroa. The road is mainly gravel and very corrugated with lots of road works on the way. There is some stock on the road so some caution is required and some road is very narrow - one lane only. Arrival at the start of the track to the top and park on... More

Beautiful view, the walk is doable by all taken at your personal pace with most of it being shaded by the trees and well worth it for the stunning view of the east cape!

The East Cape Lighthouse is definitely off the beaten track. It's a 20km drive from the main roads, most of it on gravel roads, and there's no exit, so you'll have to go back the same way. The lighthouse itself is situated on top of a hill, and there are (supposedly) 800 steps which lead you up to it. Once... More

It was a long drive from Gisborne and my son was totally unimpressed having to walk up the 800 or so steps to see the lighthouse. Once he got going though he seemed to enjoy the views but was happier at the prospect of being able to leave. The time we spent at the top was less than it took... More

I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the gravel road, just a few tight corners at the start where slips had come down and were under repair, the rest of the drive was mostly flat and followed the coast. Was nice to come across quite a stretch of sealed road in the middle too. The steps up to the... More

My young family and I visited this beautiful place in this summer, the drive was long and the roads are terrible but it was certainly worth it for the view and the wonderful scenery along the way, bring your walking shoes for the 700 - 800 odd steps up to the lighthouse but its not a tough walk, my 3... Try to see the sunrise at the first hour of 2017, we travelled to Te Araroa, a very small township some 169 km north of Gisborne. However this is not the end destination, the most east spot of NZ, East Cape Light House, is still some 21km to the east of Te Araroa. The road to this spot is a... More

Haven't been this far north for 35 odd years . sealed all the way up now and was a wonderful clear day to take in the scenery. Very windy but the sun was out . Saw where the waters converge . Big car park clean Rest Rooms . No food consumed on site but are allowed from within your campervan.... More

The road out to the cape is about 20 km long and seems to need a lot of repair work. Good pavement about half of the distance but dirt and rough areas / ongoing repair work for the other half. Make sure to take your time on the road (especially in the dark). The parking area for the trail up... More

Have been up to the Lighthouse a few times with my grand children. Thought I was going to run out of breath everytime. A steep climb but really worth it once you get to the top. Awsome scenery. Watch the sunrise and sunset.
