Opening in 1905 Muirs Bookshop is New Zealand's oldest operating bookshop. Set in a long, narrow colonial building the shop is full of the very best literature for adults and children. The many thousands of books are accompanied by a large selection...more
Pleasant staff and nice balcony for lunch, however tables hadn’t been cleared and staff forgot half the order made upon delivery ( it was left sitting next to cabinet waiting to be served) but over all nice atmosphere

Hi RachieEvo - thanks very much for your comments. Always good to get these criticisms to remind us of basics! I'll pass on to my staff.

We were only in Gisborne for two days and I was keen my visitor from England experienced a visit to Muir’s Bookshop and cafe, a bit of a Gisborne institution. We weren’t able to go on the Saturday so delayed our Sunday departure and waited...More

Hi Peyps - How frustrating and annoying for you to find we were closed on Sunday. Very sorry to have done this to you. Your comment has made me check our website. It does say we are open 10 til 2pm December and January on...More
We went in for the cafe and found great coffee and home cooked food. We then spend longer that we expected browsing the eclectic collection of books.
This was a place we visited several times during our time in Gisbourne.

So glad you enjoyed our bookshop and café. Thank you for your review.
A shop filled with actual books. And a cafe upstairs. In Gisborne. Quick, visit before online retailing kills this one too.More

Thanks James K for the 5 stars - always what we aim for. I think you'll find that the Independent Bookstores that are left in NZ are ticking along nicely - not quite what we were pre 2009 but doing OK. But - all the...More
This is a wonderful haven of bookish calm with a fabulous collection in all sections. Spacious and super relaxing...And topped with a terrific cafe upstairs serving really good coffee, cakes etc and with a balcony from which to observe the gentle folk of Gisborne below......More

Thanks epicure49 for your fantastic review of our cafe. So pleased you had a lovely visit and yes, we are often accused of being an easy place to while away several hours.
Very rekaxed, pleasant way to spend some time as a change from the beach or when the weather is iffy, great range and when we were there some good specials of books we had been wantng to get our hands on
Up there with the best in the country. Not to be missed, this place is a local legend and for good reason. Simply fantastic selection of books and associated. Who would have thought that Gisborne could hide such a cultural gem!
