Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

I totally recommend visiting Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn the history of NZ. The grounds are beautiful, the guides very knowledgeable and the performance touches your soul. Totally amazing experience.

This was an outstanding visit. I thought we would kind of just blow in and out, having no idea just how extensive the presentations were. We ended up spending hours and hours. The visitors' center, the museum, the grounds, the gift shop, and (in the...More

The museum is the real highlight here. So informative and presented in a variety of accessible ways. We could have spent a day just in the museum.

The Hangi was fabulous. The walk through the bush with challenges from the Maori chiefs was very exciting with Maori calls all around. The concert was the highlight for me. The tribute to the 25th Maori Battalion was very emotional and their performance was excellent....More

Our tour guide Kaz was hilarious, with a dry sense of humour. If you're doing the tour, keep in mind that you won't be taken inside the House of Assembly during the tour, so if you're keen to go inside, don't do the tour around...More

The guided tour took about 45 minutes. I would say it would not not be suitable for young children. There are no facilities that would be of interest like play areas. The tour would not be of interest because of the deep... More

Yes there is a entry fee to the treaty grounds but well worth it, and you do not have to do the guided tour - that is extra - quite easy to have a look around yourself but will learn so much more with the guided tour.
