Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

This is a great tour, hubby was chief for the day, excellent performance. The geysers were spectacular as are the mud flats. Thoroughly enjoyed the day, and highly recommend this tour.

You could say NZ starts here. There is a lot to see here both relating to Maori culture and the history leading to the treaty. I went on the tour which was good but we did not have enough time in the house.

This is a must visit if you visit in New Zealand to understand the history. We had a very informative tour guide and learned a lot about the New Zealand history.

The day time tour is both interesting and informative. In the evening there is the chance to participate in a traditional evening of Maori cooking (A Hangi) with entertainment and a re-inaction of a Maori challenge. A truly memorable experience.

Just caught the last tour of the day and it was well worth it. Dan Busby was our guide and what a fantastic and informative guy. He really brought the place to life. We will return tomorrow as so much to see. Thank you.

I have visited this site many times but the last visit was the best. The new visitors centre is fabulous and the treaty house show was as per every other time engaging and fantastic. This is a great site, steeped in NZ history with Maori...More

Well worth the visit. Really interesting place and the museum has such in it you can be there for literally hours. This is where I feel that I learned the most about the history of NZ and Maori culture. The guided tour was excellent and...More

Really disappointed that there is no longer any public access to anything here. As NZ residents we would have loved to visit just the flagpole and have a walk around the open grounds seen from the water - we have done this in the past....More

Kia ora and thanks for your feedback. The title of your post is incorrect, there is public access to the Treaty Grounds but there is an admission charge. Our Day Pass gives two days' unlimited access to the grounds and all buildings, plus a guided...More

Our Maori host was knowledgeable and very personable. Great explanation and demonstration of customs, including dances. The only reason I rated 4 rather than 5 stars is that my vegetarian meal was so delayed that the other 40 people in our group had all finished...More

The guided tour took about 45 minutes. I would say it would not not be suitable for young children. There are no facilities that would be of interest like play areas. The tour would not be of interest because of the deep... More

Yes there is a entry fee to the treaty grounds but well worth it, and you do not have to do the guided tour - that is extra - quite easy to have a look around yourself but will learn so much more with the guided tour.
