Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

It's important to go there and learn about the history of NZ. The museum is very interesting. We regret we didn't had enough time for the whole museum. We also liked the racing boat and the war dance.

A must to visit when in Paihia, or even for a special visit from elsewhere. An excellent museum, friendly cafe, and on a fine day a walk round the Treaty Grounds includes many notable buildings, canoes etc.. Great views of the harbour too.

Our guide was so knowledgeable, I learnt so much on our guided tour and yet it was so entertaining and conducted with great humour. The Waitangi Treaty Ground are a must do if you are going to the North Island.

Yes there is a entry fee to the treaty grounds but well worth it, and you do not have to do the guided tour - that is extra - quite easy to have a look around yourself but will learn so much more with the guided tour.
