Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

I would rate this place as a must, if you wish to learn more about Maori culture and the Treaty of Waitangi. It has a great museum and a video reenactment of the treaty signing by some 40 Chiefs is absolutely a treat, with humour...More

We didn't have time for the guided tour & cultural experience, so we perused the grounds & museum on our own. It is a beautiful location. We found the museum to be very informative and learned a lot about NZ's past. The cafe is also...More

We spent Saturday Sept. 9, 2017 here with a guided tour, lunch, ceremonial experience and full tour of excellent Museum. Definitely recommend for better understanding of Maori/European interaction, history and outcomes.

The Tour and Performance at the Marae were excellent. Thoroughly worth the $20 (NZ Residents) $40 (Tourist). Our Tour Guide John was a mine of information. We were given small radios with earphones so we could hear John's speech as we walked through the grounds....More

For someone who was curious about the treaty and simply wanted to find out a bit more, to be told that it would cost $40 to gain entry seemed ridiculous.

Yes there is a entry fee to the treaty grounds but well worth it, and you do not have to do the guided tour - that is extra - quite easy to have a look around yourself but will learn so much more with the guided tour.
