Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

A wonderful half day plus. Informative museum. Good guide with microphone earpiece to allow you to follow detail without necessarly directly looking at the guide. Great cultural experience. Well worth its admission price.

It tipped down while we were in the Bay of Islands! Sadly this meant we couldn’t enjoy the outside areas of the Treaty Grounds as much as we would have otherwise (spectacular planting!) but we spent considerable time in the very well presented museum and...More

Not to be missed to truly understand the history of this fantastic country. Potent reminder of empire building and damage done to the fabric of the landscape. Also how this has been repaired in subsequent generations.

The guided tour took about 45 minutes. I would say it would not not be suitable for young children. There are no facilities that would be of interest like play areas. The tour would not be of interest because of the deep... More

Yes there is a entry fee to the treaty grounds but well worth it, and you do not have to do the guided tour - that is extra - quite easy to have a look around yourself but will learn so much more with the guided tour.
