I wouldn't make the trip just to see this thing, but worth checking out if you are in New Plymouth. Pretty easy to spot on the waterfront.

Not too sure what one is meant to get out of watching the wind wand. Except it would be more exciting if it got struck by lightening like the one did in Wellington. Then that would be spectacular!

Great spot to have a wander and look at the wand and great board walk... there is nearby parking close by... only fault is plaque gives very little details on wand... had to Google it to discover the ins and outs...

Designed by Len Lye and was installed in December 1999 along with the Coastal Walkway. The Wind Wand is a 48 metre tube of red fibreglass.

If you're in New Plymouth and anywhere near the waterfront you'll see this wind wand - it's iconic and well worth making sure you see it.

It is quite amazing how it just moves in the breeze. The walkway is very wide and can accommodate many people.

Perhaps I'm too practical, but I cannot grasp the fuss made about this 45m tall orange-red pole that flaps in the wind. It's a pole, for goodness sake! I assure you, with the gales in New Plymouth, you definitely don't need a pole to tell...More
