I love this place. I come here when ever in the area. Free too. Must see when in Taupo. The start of the Mighty Waikato River.

Start at Huka Falls carpark and run 7.5km to the dam. Time it to see the floodgates open! It's a lot more rewarding than just rocking up in your car if you're physically able to do a 15km walk or run. :) Make sure to...More

The dams open around 10 & 12 and in summer months 4pm. To ensure you don't miss them checkout their website. For the best views cross the road from the car park and walk up the well marked track. There are two viewing points one...More

This is a cool place to call in and take a look at if you are around at the right times. It's amazing watching how quickly the water flows out of the dam and fills up the river.

Can't beleive we didn't know about this sooner, what a great free outing for the family! Recommend starting on the bridge to see the dam opening, then it's only a 5-10 minute walk to the middle viewing point, you can get there before the water...More

The dam release itself is pretty cool. However, we expected some kind of tidal surge and felt a little underwhelmed. Great for a before and after picture. Would recommend the mid viewpoint for dam release. Great for LOTR fans!

I cannot believe I have missed it all these years. I have been to Taupo so many times but never been to Aratiatia Rapids. May be because I never asked what it was all about. Only if I knew that I could see the water...More

From the bridge, from the viewing platforms, anywhere within the safety of all. This is one of the top attractions you cannot miss. We are locals and are still amazed by the force of the water, the views and natural habitat.
