Get to one of the vantage points to truly appreciate the power of the river rapids. The water's released four times a day, at 10, 12, 2 and 4 o'clock

We popped down to see the gates opening. Bus loads of people arrived 20 minutes before the gates opened. The 1st siren goes off, then at 2 minutes the 2nd siren...the anticipation is now boiling over, and then the 3rd siren screams and the gates begin to open. It was rather an anti-climax as we expected something wow. I would... More

This was a great afternoon for our family. You must plan your trip to coincide with the flood gates opening, we went at 4.00pm. A short walk takes you to the middle view point which seems to be the most popular. Get there early as there is a crowd. And guess what.....it is free!

The opening of the dam is super interesting to see, as the water pool fills up and forms a rapid and then empties again in the span of ca 30 min. It is cool to see and I you have the time and can make the scheduled time there I would recommend going :)

A great place to visit for a picnic or just a quick stop over. Make sure you time it right as the flood gates only open every couple of hours. Make sure you arrive at least 20 mins before the gates open to allow yourself time to choice where you would like to wittiness the flood gates change the water.... More

We travelled to Aratiatia rapids via mountain bikes. We started at Spa road park, went across the rotary Huka falls track, then across the Aratiatia loop track. It is an easy track with a few ups and downs, although if you go right around, it is about 30 km's. The rapids were an added bonus to the ride and were... More

Make sure you time it right! There are specific times to visit to witness the change as the rapids open - so get there 10 mins before the gates are due to open so you can appreciate the changes.

Amazing to view rapids flooding with tons of water. Three good vantage points, bridge, lookout 1 and lookout 2. In holiday season get there early to get a park and walk to viewpoint and secure a good spot.

See how the rapids are recreated when the flood gates are opened - for about 15 minutes white foam are everywhere as the water storms out. Ample parking available and toilet as well (although primitive)
