Remember this place like it was yesterday, from quite a few years back. Arrived via boat to stay a few nights with a small group from our class. The local penguins and seals were great to wake up to first thing in the morning in the Bay. Perfect place to camp, amenities more than adequate for our period of stay.... More

Such a great destination, we were the for 3 nights and we wished we'd had stayed longer, great walks, great snorkeling, and pretty good DOC cabins. Good entertainment for the whole family

Mayor Island is a great destination for camping, hiking, trail running, kayaking, fishing and snorkelling/diving. The island has a basic but adequate camping area (with a very low nightly fee) and a helpful, friendly custodian who can answer questions about the island. Various track cross the island under New Zealand's only Pohutukawa bush canopy that lead to the highest point... More

Although you're not allowed to land on the island without going through some kind of quarantine (protection of the wildlife), we all went snorkelling and saw some incredible fish. Dora caught some sea urchins and we all had a taste, I have to say, a rather unusual flavour like salty cream, but definitely... More

Some of the best fishing I've ever done, makes for great memories in and around the bays and the diving is amazing.

The island was a hive of activity with the barge arriving to take a logging truck to the mainland and the school bus waiting for the high school children to come back to the island after school.

If you get a good day out here it's great. The trip out is long and relaxing. Some boats come out here to fish, others to drop people off that either live on or holidaying on this island. Excellent fishing, we got into a sheltered place which was great with plenty of fish. Returning back to port can be a... More

This is a must visit if you are into peace & quiet & enjoy walking or tramping. The local native wildlife & native trees make a great trip to this dormant volcano.
