Hashigo Zake is New Zealand's most single minded beer outlet - defiantly excluding the bland, the boring and the industrial and only serving beer, wine, sake and whisky that our staff and regular customers get excited about. If any of that is a problem, Wellington has plenty of other outlets willing to take your money. But if you want an ever-rotating range of great drinks, brutally frank advice from knowledgeable staff, free wifi and a warm, welcoming environment, step out of the chaos above ground into our basement bar.

Definitely a hidden gem in the heart of downtown Wellington. Huge variety of many different beers. Prices are a bit high so check the menu before ordering.

My wife and I stopped in for a few beers in the middle of the afternoon. This was a good time to visit as the place was pretty empty so we were able to chat with the British bartender. He provided us with a lot of good info re NZ beers and Wellington bars/restaurants. They have a very good selection... More

Attractive underground location. Numerous beers on tap and many more in bottles and cans. Clean and bright with ample seating and tables. Live bands some nights. Downtown location is convenient to hotels, restaurants and other bars.

There is a huge craft beer culture in New Zealand and in Wellington there is a stylish bar that showcases some of the best craft beers from New Zealand. Hashigo Zake is the place to go to try out new and interesting brews, as well as home grown craft beers there are also imports from Australia and Japan as well... More

We stopped in for a light dinner on the recommendation of a Wellingtonian we'd met. We weren't disappointed. Off an alley and down a flight of stairs is a cozy, sort-of-Japanese space with a very impressive list of craft and cult beers, dumplings and small entrees. The night we were there featured a tap "takeover" by two Danish and German... More

Came here for one beer and stayed a lot longer. I was really impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of the bar staff. They really know their beer and can tell you about all the breweries they stock. Went above and beyond. If you like good beer, come here!

Me and my fiancée went to try to have ourselves a nice evening with some beer tastings and we found ourselves on Hashigo Zake. The venue was quite easy to find and we came in at a time when the bar was almost empty. The earthquake that hit NZ happened just three days prior and the city was still assessing... More

First stop of our quest to get stamps on the Craft Beer Capital Map. A small entrance off a Main Street keeps this place a little hidden. The stairs lead you down into the basement for the bar. We came on the Queens birthday, so it wasn't very busy. Bartender was helpful with suggestions based on our tastes. Had a... More

Another nice little craft beer bar tucked away downstairs off Taranaki Street. Not too crowded when we went on a Friday night and a good variety of beer available. We tried a Plum porter made by one of the staff which was delicious, followed by a Mike's VCP..YUM! Staff are very welcoming and friendly and nice mix of age groups among... More
