ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

We took the free shuttle from the civic centre. The van only holds about 10 people. The van comes about every hour. The drive to zealandia was about 20 minutes. Admission was $18 per adult. There are bathrooms and a cafe. The nature walk from the visitors centre to the upper dam bridge took about 45 minutes one way not... More

As a Wellingtonian I am very proud to have this amazing santcuary on our doorstep and visit as often as possible. The birdlife is simply incredible and I've often spotted kaka, kereru, tui, takahē, kākāriki (New Zealand parakeet), hihi (stitchbird), tieke (saddleback) and piwakawaka. You might also get lucky and see one of the Tuatara on your visit! I've seen... More

Walkways (some hilly) through forests and marshes. Wildlife, including the 22-year old takahe. Huge dam and swinging bridge along the way. You can go at your own pace and explore different tracks. There is a good info centre and cafe.

Great place to visit to experience some of New Zealand's natural wildlife and plants. Spend at least half a day there to get the full experience of all the different tracks that you can follow. We found the map slightly confusing to follow however all tracks wind around and meet each other in different places so overall it wasn't really... More

It's not an inexpensive option to do the guided night walk but quite how you would expect to see very much with 14 people making a noise following a guide who out of necessity needs to talk so everyone can hear us beyond me. IMHO it is just too many people. We have been in many wildlife experiences both day... More

Hi Mark, we are sorry that the ZEALANDIA by Night tour was not as you would have hoped. We did have a wedding reception on Sunday night and, from talking with your night guide, we are aware that there was some noise spill along the first 5 minutes of the track and noise in the Visitors Centre. We don’t normally... More

I have been a member of Zealandia for several years because I support its aims, and because I live close enough to be benefiting from the return of native birds to Wellington city. I confess though that I got a bit bored with the Sanctuary itself - too many visits! However, I pushed onto the tougher walks above the Upper... More

Dont understand any negative reviews of this lovely place. I went early one morning - just as it was opening - and didnt see another person till around 11am! It was cloudy but not raining which was ideal for walking. I did a long loop and saw tons of birds the whole way. The tracks are absolutely beautiful, and well... More

Great place to see endangered species, especially birds. Level(ish) access to main parts, with more strenuous but quieter paths for the more able bodied, well worth the visit. Take your time.
