Our original Studio on Fitzgerald Ave was wrecked by the earthquake on February 22nd 2011. I was able to salvage all of my equipment and convert my garage at home on Marshland Rd into a new studio which was open until March 2016. We have moved to Birdlings Flat which is 45kms from the center of Christchurch on the Christchurch/Akaroa Rd. The new Studio has taken 7 months to rebuild and is now ready for people wishing to make their own Bone Carving with us. The French Connection shuttle stops at Birdlings Flat at 10am in the morning on its run to Akaroa and returns at 4pm on the return trip back to Christchurch for those that require transport. Birdlings Flat is one of the great Gemstone beaches of New Zealand and we hope that any visitors to our Studio take the time to explore this stretch of coastal NZ. At this stage we are running 2 sessions a week, Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings but we can also run other sessions but conditions do apply. John & Barb

A group of 5 of us visited John's studio this Friday and did we have a fantastic time. John is a very skilled (and humble) artist. Upon arrival we were able to learn about different types of bone, view his work, pick out a design, and begin! A couple of us chose to draw our own designs and John offered... More

Went to a session on Saturday, and absolutely loved it. Even if you have never even thought about carving something yourself you will walk out with something you are proud of. John is an awesome teacher that shows you what to do without staring over your shoulder all the time, and is able to provide a nice and relaxing atmosphere... More

John is fantastic at sharing his craft, he is humble and gives you time to create something that you are proud of. We did not feel rushed and had great conversations about history of carving, different tools and types of bone. The website could do with an update(eg:adding more photos to gallery and a more modern theme), however, when you... More

I originally found The Bone Dude here on Trip Advisor and so glad I did, and only a 45 min or so (rather enjoyable) drive from Christchurch! I thoroughly enjoyed making my own bone carving necklace, you have a choice of 16 different options of which I chose the whale tail as I find the beach/seaside a great place go... More

Hi GypsyR, Thank you for your disappointment, to me it means you were keen to have a go. Unfortunately the process of shifting and rebuilding a new studio is taking longer than I anticipated. I hope the rest of your time in NZ lives up to your expectations. More

An amazing way to spend a few hours in christchurch. If you've been in new zealand any amount of time, you'll have seen the necklaces and symbols everywhere. Here you get a chance to make one for yourself. Having no experience or artistic flare wasn't an issue. Super friendly and keen to help. Don't miss out! Definitely the highlight of... More

Really enjoyed our 3 hours spent at John's workshop and my wife and I created our amazing souvenirs based on our own design! John is the friendliest dude and super helpful, great to have a chat with about Christchurch too, we have really had great time and now wearing our new NZ custom made gifts proudly :-)

Really enjoyed our session with John! He gave the perfect amount of advice to turn a scrappy piece of cow bone into a really professional looking pendant. There were quite a few people in our session but he remembered everyone's names and where we'd come from. He was happy to help with any questions we had or content to let... More
