KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...

KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington.

KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Took the Christ Church to Picton to the ferry-Luggage was transferred for us. Spent a lot of time on the observation car taking photos. Pass trough 21 tunnels, all short. Just follow the beach up the east coast of the south island. Dining car.

Lovely big windows to look out of, comfortable chairs (must sit on right side of train to be on the coast) Small cafe on board to buy drinks and snacks.

This is a relaxed way to see the coast. No traffic, no big slow trucks, or worse, really fast ones, and no campervans. The highway is good and hugs the coast in places, but the railway goes along stretches of coast where there are no roads. On the way you'll see North Canterbury's rolling hills and sheep country and the... More

My husband and I were heading through to Palmerston North for a family birthday, we decided to take the trip in different style. Rather than fly to the Nth Island we chose to take the train were we could sit back enjoy the scenery have a relaxing drink, we also took the ferry over to Wellington. The train staff are... More

We loved this journey from Picton to Christchurch by rail after travelling from Wellington via the ferry that morning. We grabbed some rolls at the Subway store at the train station prior to jumping on board to keep the troops happy with something freshly made. We were lucky enough to be allocated to a set of four seats with a... More

We decided to do a long weekend trip. We would leave the car in Wellington, take the ferry to Picton, train from Picton to Christchurch, Tranz Alpine the next day and then fly back to Wellington to drive home. As you step off the ferry, the railway station is only a few hundred metres away. It is a beautiful old... More

We took the Interislander ferry and boarded the train after we landed at Picton. We travelled to Kaikoura where we met the coach again. The trip went through more parts of the countryside we would not have seen if we had done the journey fully by coach. There was some awe inspiring scenery and the entire trip was fun and... More

I didn't want to both with driving to Christchurch so after taking the InterIslander Ferry from Wellington, I connected with the train. It's an easy connection. They coordinate the times and it's barely a 5 minute walk from the ferry to the train. Very relaxing and scenic ride.
