We were greeted by a lovely woman who explained the layout of the museum to us, and then began exploring! The museum had a lot of different topics and displays, including Antarctic expeditions, moa and Maori, and a gift shop. Definitely recommend checking it out, especially since it is pay-by-donation.

This museum has free entry with donations greatly appreciated. It is by no means a complete and thorough museum, but it does touch upon many areas including a large view into the history and culture of New Zealand as well as exhibits of dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, sea and birdlife and others. This is a great place to pass some time... More

Really enjoyed our visit today. There is a big exhibition on the history of Canterbury, from the earliest Maori settlers to the more recent European arrivals. The 19th Century street scene must have take a huge amount of work. It's fascinating to see the kind of tools they had, and the things they were capable of making.

Making a visit to the Canterbury Museum was a splendid idea whereas it's right next to one of the main entrances to probably the biggest feature in Christchurch, the Botanical Gardens. Not to mention my hotel, the YMCA, was right across the street from both places and as such, it made for a super easy location to get to. The... More

I visited with my geriatric father to go to Air NZ 75th Anniversary exhibition. Had phoned ahead to see if Canterbury Museum had wheelchairs available. Yes - they do. So we swapped my father's walking frame for their wheelchair upon arrival. Everyone was so helpful and we had an awesome time at the Air NZ exhibition, including a lovely staff... More

The ground floor traces development in the area from early times and also has a replica Victorian street to walk through. The first floor has natural history, Asians and South Pole expedition exhibits which are fascinating.

Interesting muesum. Well laid out with interesting subject matter on mid 18 and 19 century clothing, motor bikes and cable cars. It had a nice gift shop to purchase souvenirs.

It seemed like they had a little bit of everything. There was a recreation of an early city street in Christchurch, Antarctic expeditions, natural history, Maori art, and more. A great cross section of the south island.

Aviation buffs unite.... I loved seeing all the beautiful uniforms of a by-gone era... From someone in aviation, I always enjoy seeing the history behind an airline. Lots of interesting aspects and even something for people interested in aviation today. With 787 cockpit recordings and video. Engines, design your own aircraft paint scheme and uniforms for the kids to try... More
