Yes, you can walk through the Rock on the beach, paddle in the sea and have a coffee at one of the very few beachside cafes. It's a very ordinary seaside town - you've probably been to hundreds that are better!

Visited here while doing a tour of Christchurch and was really impressed with how clean the beach was and really liked the ambience here and the people were really friendly. Great real fruit ice cream stall practically on the beach was amazing. Highly recommended.

Difficult to find a parking spot but plenty of eateries. A nice beach and plenty of surfers. A nice afternoon out.

Lots of sand, good for children, and fairly safe waves. It's the only beach in the South Island with a promenade, and it's a good walk on a sunny day.
