Saw the devastated building from outside the fence. Good reminder to treasure life and not take it for granted. Happened to chance upon Diwali fair beside the church. Added some positive notes to the down atmosphere.
As a visitor I can only imagine this once majestic site is ruined by political turmoil of some kind.
To visit today, one can see rusty original steel stabilisation beams, some appear twisted, the site boarded up, looks abandoned long ago, now derelict... Sad.
The cathedral suffered very significant damage during the 2011 earthquake but it is being rebuilt. You cannot of course get access to it just now but it will be worth visiting when the repairs have been completed. In the meantime the congregation have moved into...More

Christchurch Cathedral has always been the icon for Christchurch - it is a huge pity that the decision to repair this incredible building has taken so many years and has not yet started. A great pity indeed.
