Tunnel beach is at the bottom of a short, but steep, walk across private land (closed 1st August to end of October, for lambing). In the 1870's it was farmed by John Cargill, he had a tunnel dug to allow his children to access the beach. The beach itself has stunning sandstone formations, some resident pidgeons, Sea caves and some very old graffiti.

Long hike but worth it

The track is kinda long with some steep sections so be prepared if you wanna go. But there's no time limitation so take your time to enjoy the walk and the wind. Most of the track has flat surface so it's pretty easy to walk but there's a short distance near the end that is not. And there's no toilets... More

This is definitely a place worth walk down (do require certain fitness to walk down and up). Do allow a few hours because you will want to enjoy the view and explore once you get to rock and beach.

One of my favourite places in Dunedin! This has got really popular since I was last here 5 or so years ago - the road end parking was full. The track has definitely had some work and is in really good condition. Don't underestimate the effort to walk back up and how exposed this beautiful spot is!

The walk back is steep but just about worth it. It isnt the most phenomonal geological site you will see but if you have a spare hour it is worth a diversion. Try driving a little further south afterwards to Brighton beach. Stunning!

This is definitely worth the walk down. We loved it and really enjoyed the surroundings. Great place to take photos! It is a steep walk back up but take your time and it's definitely worth the visit.

This is an amazing place but you need to be fit to cope with the climb down and then back up. The views are amazing and the tunnel is a unique feature.

This was something we wanted to do and were glad we did but be warned - the path down to the beach and stairway tunnel is steep in alot of places and at least a couple of kms from car park area. Coming back up the hill will test your fitness as well as your legs. The beach is quite... More

We were lucky enough to do this walk on a warm sunny day so the view was spectacular and we got a good workout too! Allow a few hours because you are going to want to soak in the view and explore once you get down to the Rock and beach. The tunnel down to the beach is a little... More

This a great little walk down to a stunning little beach. Well worth the slog back up on a hot autumn day that could have been summer.

If you come to Dunedin, this is a must place to visit. The walk down to the beach is easy and when you pass the secret tunnel, it leads you to this beautiful beach you wont be dissapointed. However going back up is quite a work but it is still a family friendly place to visit. I had a 7... More
