Stopped by chance but was amazed to find 4 very large and very quick sea lions in the dunes next to the lighthouse. We were able to get some fantastic photos whilst keeping a respectful distance from these wild animals. The views and the waves crashing onto the rocks and beach were spectacular. It is a 10 km drive on... More

Situated on the rugged catlins coastline with easy road access this is a fantastic place to visit. The lighthouse itself is picture worthy but the beautiful coastline surrounds are amazing. Often there are resting sealions or seals so be careful not to disturb them. I have also on occasions seen a penguin. There is a mass gravesite nearby for the... More

Naturally the lighthouse is right at the coast and has great view of the waves breaking on the rocks. It was quite windy on my visit, so I did not stay long. Note that access is over a gravel road only.

The lighthouse has been repainted since the photo shown. Lovely piece of history and wonderful views. Sealions sunbathe on the beach below. Sand dunex close by. Worth a stop.

It was worth the beautiful drive and a look, but it was quite windy, cold and rainy, which is not unusual, so we only had a quick look. Would have liked to see it up close. If the weather cooperates, do it!

Well worth negotiating the shocking road to get to this gem on Southland's famous Catlins tourist route. The golden sands meet an ocean that sparkles in a myriad shades of blue, with the driven waves crashing onto the beach in lacy white froth and depositing brown seaweed onto the beach. Sealions bask in the sun and the day of our... More

The Light house has an interesting history and it was put up after one of the big ship disasters on a reef just off shore. More that 130 persons perished.

This turned out to be a real jewel. We walked down to the beach and saw a sea lion relaxing there in the sand. As we walked around, we found another one that we were able to get even closer to. The rocky beach area had a very interesting look. We began walking down the beach, some of us in... More

We were very lucky to see sealions at this beach. One seemed so used to humans that it almost seemed to pose for photographs. It was amazing! It's a drive off the Southern Scenic route but well worth it to see the old lighthouse (not open for entry) and the possibility of an up close view of sea lions in... More
