Overview
More
Stewart Island Experience operates daily ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island all year around. Stewart Island is New Zealand's ultimate eco-tourism destination and the location of Rakiura National Park. During the one hour ferry crossing, keep a look out for the Mollymawks (Albatross) that often follow the vessel. Daily coach connections operate between Bluff and Invercargill, and in summer also to Te Anau and Queenstown (summer only).

Better to use if you prefer to travel by boat, and save a few bucks rather than flying. Be sure you have a semi-strong stomach for the ocean can be rough. Otherwise great views leaving Stewart Island.

We had been warned that it can be a rough crossing--we had calm seas both ways but I could see why the boat might get tossed around. But it's a fast hour to Stewart Island and a lot more convenient than the plane ride--which can...More

If you aren't good at traveling by sea, then I suggest you fly. However, if you want to get a feel of what it's like to live on Stewart Island , then the ferry is the best introduction. The ferry is rarely cancelled, but if...More

The catamaran was clean, modern and provided a mixture of mostly individual seating with a few tabled booths (snacks can be purchased with free complimentary tea or coffee available from small bar) as well as outdoor seating- first on best seated! Baggage gets stowed in...More

Not for the weak stomachs! Our crossing was on a relatively calm day but the fast cat still rocked and rolled. Expertly navigated by the captain. A more difficult day would be interesting.

Probably everyone says something like this! I think we were lucky that the sea was relatively calm. It felt like being at an adventure park on one of the water attractions. There boat was certainly moving around quite a bit. However the seats are comfy...More
