Having researched Ulva Island prior to going, the experience lived up to every expectation and more; definitely the 'high' of our trip (if you want to experience 'clean, green, pure' natural NZ then this is it!). The (10 minute trip) ferry we caught was $20/return with the option for you to choose any of the return trip times (eg we... More

What a lovely place to come for a wander- the work that has been done to restore to its natural state is fantastic. It's great to see and hear so much bird life and see the bush as it should be. Stunning!

Didn't hire a guide because it was too late in the day, just caught a water taxi over to the island. I walked every meter of path and sat and watched birds at several places. Saw a kiwi! Also saw several other birds of interest and learned a bunch of new plants. Great place to visit. Give yourself at least... More

One of the travel brochures described this as a must-do, and I have to agree. It provides a great opportunity to experience a NZ forest hike and coastal experience in one. There will be birds, but the reward is in the total day, from the walk to Golden Bay wharf, to the short boat ride over to Ulva, to the... More

Would recommend visiting Ulva Island on your stay. We did the island in about 2 hours as we walked all the tracks quickly and while the bird sightings and wildlife were awesome, we weren't as passionate as some to spot different species. Would spend longer here on a nice summers day with a picnic as some beautiful beach spots.

If you are an avid birder and naturalist this island off of the main Stewart Island is a bucket list trip. Completely free of vermin the native birds have a safe place to live and multiply. Temperate rain forest with ancient native trees unlike anywhere else in the world I have traveled. Suggest you go with a local Moari guide... More

We had previously been to Tiritiri Marathi and thought this would be similar. We were wrong. The boat trip across is pleasant. The birds are not prolific or obvious, but we saw kakariki, tuis, silvereye, tomtit, Stewart Island Robins and some others. The native bush is really the hero of this walk with magnificent trees to be enjoyed.

Four hours wasn't enough to explore and wnjoy the wild bird life on this sanctuary island. Topped off by seeing natural kiwi in broad daylight

Visited Ulva Island on our own and walked all the tracks. Amazing pockets of bird life - you had to take the time to stop every now and then and the bush just seemed to come alive. Easy well maintained tracks. Delightful spending time on the beach with the weka fossicking in the seaweed.
