My boyfriend and I did the Routeburn Track in one day, and despite the rain and wind for the first half of the hike, this was the highlight of our trip. We used Trackhopper to help us move our car from the Routeburn Shelter to...More

The Routeburn Track continues to live up to its reputation, and no more so than after a fresh snow dusting and "blue-bird" sky days.... The shoulder season is a great way to see the track as it should be seen without the crowds. If you...More

A fun day hike up a fairly steep trail to an alpine lake. Lovely alpine scenery and a great place for a picnic.

Routeburn track is absolutely gorgeous. We used Easyhike for our logistics, including backpacks, food and relocation of our car. They are very nice and responsive. Great service! Will use Easyhike again next time.

Really awesome views, if you're lucky with the weather. We had hiking boots though could have easily done it in running shoes like many i passed were wearing. All the huts are on good simple and clean though nevertheless we camped without incident. For Kepler...More

This track was reall great. The scenery is fantastic all the way long. I found the Key Summit views better than Conical Hill. The camping grounds and the huts are amaizingly situated with beautifull views. Everything is very clean and well maintained by DOC friendly...More

An absolutely stellar hike and the pick of the three we did while in NZ (Abel Tasman and Tongariro being the others). Definitely challenging, unless you're a seasoned hiker who does treks every weekend, but highly rewarding. Only negative was trying to stay ahead of...More

Three young guides conducted our group of 24 on this 3-day walk along the amazing Routeburn Track. The accommodation was excellent and the food very good.

Good track - a little challenging. Good huts. A must do is to visit luxmore cave near the hut. Travelled with a family group.

This is an amazing walk. It covers bush and alpine terrain. The huts along the way are well serviced. The hut wardens are very passionate about the track and wild life and generally very interesting to listen to. There are several side trips which are...More

We are considering walking the whole Routeburn with our children (aged 6 and 8). DOC says the track is not suitable for under 10 year olds - does anyone have experience with younger (reasonably fit) children on this track?

Hi Emily, I just posted a review of our Routeburn trip with our kids 10 and 11. We didnt find the track too strenuous but I would worry about young kids walking on the edge of cliffs with life changing drops. I worried about... More

My husband and I (both early 30s) will be hiking the Routeburn Track in mid-February. We are staying in the Routeburn Falls hut the first night, and the second night can choose between the Lake Mackenzie campsite or the Lake Howden hut. We like the idea of staying in huts, as our packs will be lighter without camping gear, however the Lake Howden would make for a much longer second day. Any advice on which option might make for a more pleasant trip? We don't have a lot of backpacking experience but are reasonably fit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

We recently did the Routeburn, and on the second day tramped from the Falls hut to the Howden hut. It took us about 7 hours and was reasonably tough, we even asked the warden at the Mackenzie hut if we could use our tickets... More

Hi! I'm planning to do the great walk with a group in Feb/March and need some advice! Has anyone completed the walk in 2D1N and could recommend which route to start with/hut to stay in? I.e Would it be advisable to start at the Routeburn shelter and stay one night at the Routeburn Falls (it looks like amazing view!) and then end at the divide the next day? If also anyone who knows or can advise on any side walks worth going either way.

Hello! The Routeburn is definitely doable in two days. And I would agree with the person above that you can do the track in one day, but I would definitely not recommend it. Yes, you would still see most of the views, but... More
