Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto. Departs Te Anau.

This was on my 25 y/o daughters bucket list, so it was fun to do. We just had to cross the street from our hotel to get to the place the tour started, which was very convenient.

Is there a certain time of day when they glow more? Based on the reviews some people are underwhelmed and others mesmerized which makes me wonder if there is a better season or time of day to see them. Also, we will be with my three young sons and I know they would like to hear the tour guide clearly, is there an additional charge to sit near the tour guide? Thank you in advance.

Aloha, I agree with the other answers. I can't explain why some people like something and the same amount of people don't like it similar to the elections recently in America.
