Overview
More
Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed must see. This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. This set of 19th and 20th century gaol buildings create a pocket in time, and the experiences within brings history to life. This regional gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. We house important collections such as the hangman's kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird's-eye view from the watchtower. With guided tours, night tours, and theatrical experiences on offer, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a rare piece of history open to explore.

What a fabulous place! Great history, very well displayed and preserved. Gave a great insight into the way things were. Little gift shop at the front entrance. They were even kind enough to let us take out little dog in.

Loved showing my daughter the old history at the goal where actual hanging did happen. She loves learning so what better then to shower actual history. A place for any history buff.

The Gaol is a small piece of history and doesn’t take long to get around, but it’s a must for history buffs.

Spent a fun few hours exploring the gaol. There were some costumed re-enactments that added some fun for the kids. Self guided tour around the areas of the gaol, including cells, watch tower, infirmary. Lots of history around how hangings happened in the late 1800s....More

I thought visiting an old gaol, "ho-hum!" Wrong! Putting things into perspective this is a part of our history. The gaol is not very large but it is interesting, there are motion activated audio presentations as you walk through. In the gate house you can...More

Well maintained and clean facility. Displays had engaging stories and explanations. Interesting history. We didn’t have time for the character sessions and escape stories, though, which was a shame. A little bit pricey for the size of the place, $17.50 Per adult and $41 for...More

it was definitely interesting but when you are a family of 5, it is quite costly to get in and look around which is a shame. Please lower your prices and make it affordable for kids to learn about our history.More
