The Ballarat Art Gallery is a majestic old building, which houses many exquisite historical paintings, but also features modern exhibitions. There is always something new to see! The kids loved seeing all the different styles. The gift shop in itself is interesting, and the cafe serves wonderful food and coffee as well. An all round wonderful place to visit!

The signage to the gallery is extremely poor almost as if they do not want people to find it. Once found we were delighted to see the paintings particularly those of Australian artists pre 1950. Also liked the temporary exhibition concerning victims of child sexual abuse.

To find such wonderful works of art in a country town is just amazing. This gallery has such history and an incredible collection of Australian art. The cafe downstairs is fantastic too!

This gallery is opulent and has an equally opulent collection of art, including a very respectable collection of Australian art and modern art. Go on a tour to get the most out of this gallery.

This really must be one of the best Australian art galleries. Aided by some generous bequests, the collection contains many masterpieces by European and Australian painters, and the contemporary gallery is particularly strong. It's also free, and very close to the station. The free tours at 2 pm are great value, and the guides are enthusiastic and well-trained. I'd give... More

The Art Gallery of Ballarat has a great collection of Australian art. Most of the collection focuses on works by artists of European background though there is a small selection of work by Indigenous Australian artists and artists of other backgrounds. A particular highlight when I visited was the interactive Australian Symphony Orchestra exhibit.

Couldn't believe when i found out that it was free. Definitely worth a visit as it has some great artists like Tom Roberts and Drysdale. Also had a lot of newer artists. Amazed that the art gallery was so large. Will definitely go back.

I had some time to spare between appointments & wish I had more time. Great regional gallery, free entry, gift shop, parking isn't free & coin only in most areas, or shop around the corner & park for free near Big W & walk a block or two. Great little cafe on ground level, a few stairs. Exhibitions currently on... More

This gallery doesn't go in for many visiting exhibitions, sadly but has had the Archibalds twice recently. Nevertheless it has an excellent collection of 19th century australian art as well as a good array of more contemporary works. It is well laid out and a lovely cosy spot on a cold Ballarat day. The adjoining cafe is also worth stopping... More
