Panoramic views of Wanganui, the river and coastline. The tower was built to commemorate the fallen of the 1914-1918 war. Approach to the tower is by over 200 steps or by winding road, or an elevator, which is so much easier.

If you are visiting Whanganui this is a must see attraction. Great Panasonic views of the surrounding district can be had from the top of this attraction from War Memorial Tower if you are energetic or the lift tower if your not so energetic.

We did not except what we found. An interesting elevator ride down to the bottom with a knowledgeable driver. Once at the bottom it's a long walk to the end (got to yell to here the echo) I decided to walk up the hill (I wouldn't recommend unless you are fit !!) good view from the top

a great chance for the kids to run up all the stairs and then experience the old lift coming down on how lifts worked in the mine

Fun and interesting place to visit. Great for small and big kids alike. Fantastic views of Wanganui, Mount Ruapehu, and out to sea on a clear day. Great exercise climbing the memorial tower too.

Not something you would find just anywhere, and elevator in a hill. Definitely an interesting experience walking down a long tunnel to the elevator and then after the ride up arriving to a fabulous view of the city and river.

Never seen anything like this before - a long tunnel to walk through before ringing a bell & an old lift eventually appears with a lift attendant! The lift rises slowly through the hillside before popping out in a higher part of town. A god send for those who don't want to walk up the hill & a great tourist... More

This is a must if you visit Whanganui. Just over the bridge on Victoria street, you will find the entry tunnel, it's a long well lit tunnel, taking you to an old elevator ( built in 1919) and (person operated for $2 a person) that rattles its way to the top. If you climb the spiral metal staircase, you get... More

I love Whanganui and the tunnel to the elevator is just another high light not to be missed the gold coin to ride the elevator is a cheap quaint walk back in time. Once at the top there's the tower and views from directly on top of the lift. The views over the river are great. Then 100 metres away... More
