Extremely disappointing. The Sea life were contained in shabby bathtubs and aquariums with little else, and looked lifeless. Building was grotty and well over due a rehaul. Would not recommend.

I’d say this local aquarium is a must see. It’s small and most of the exhibits look as though they were put together by a middle schoolers, but don’t be misled. This place is packed with information on the local marine life and it’s fascinating. There are two touch tanks so you can actually put your hands on some of... More

This place is pretty small and it should be a donation system rather than an entry fee. I felt pretty sorry for the fish as they looked like cramped conditions. The whole thing looked like some school science project recycled into a tourist attraction. Maybe kids would enjoy it but it's not for adults. Also floor is slippery.

We loved this aquarium. It is small and humble but well organised and thought out. Has some interesting suprises. Some people have commented that the displays do not have enough enrichment (like for the octopus) but we were told animals are not kept for long but are returned to the sea and new specimans brought in.

It is a pretty good aquarium, a bit small, but the prices are lower than the aquariums in the bigger cities too. It was cool to see the sharks, the lobster, and all the different sea creatures. The best part was the touch pool, where you can carefully touch the different things in the rock pool. It is good for... More

Not flash by any means and seems to run on a small budget, but staffed with dedicated people who love the ocean. Interesting exhibits and great for kids to touch in the sea pool. We enjoyed our visit.

Whilst camping in Ashley Gorge we were told of the Kaikoura Marine Aquariam by a resident of these parts. "It may appear a little rustic and amateurish" she told. Well it fits that description perfectly but it is so interesting. Shanty sheds at the end of the Wharf house a true treasure chest of information relative the things we may... More

First off this all Volunteer run facility was only founded in 2011. That said there is still a lot that they will probably add in the future as they gain both funds and notoriety. We had a wonderful time in the aquarium reading and wandering from tank to tank. This aquarium focuses ONLY on local aquatic life unlike most big... More

I had walked from the town and came across the aquarium so decided to support the volunteer- run facility. Watched the DVD for about 45 minutes, having been told it ran for 30 minutes or so. Abandoned it in the end as it just rolled one episode after the other of 'Our Big Blue Backyard'. Would have been better had... More

This is a lovely place in Kaikoura! There is lots of Marine animals to look at! There is a touch pool where you can put your hands and touch things! There is even baby sharks in a bog bath tub! It is so amazing and wonderful! There is lots of things to buy as well! Everyone can enjoy it!
