Kaikoura offers a unique opportunity to get up close to pelagic birds after only a short boat trip from town. Our trip this morning (at 0600) included great views of 5 albatross species and a wide assortment of skuas, gulls, petrels and shearwaters. As a bonus we got mixed up with a big pod of dusky and common dolphins and... More

We are bird enthusiasts so to see these huge birds so close was an experience we will. Never forget. But even if you just like a scenic boat trip it was great we saw hector Dolphins too and seals on the big rocks. Very well organised Gary was so nice and very knowledgable. .

I'm fortunate to be able to describe myself as a pelagic 'veteran' across four continents. Kaikoura is world famous for its sheer number of albatrosses and species diversity so close to a major landmass. Encounter Kaikoura run two different tours, one to swim with dolphins (see my five star review on Trip Adviser) and this one to see albatrosses. The... More

I booked this tour because I was curious about the albatross and giant petrels, having never seen them in real life. I am not really a huge bird watcher and do not know a lot about them, and was worried it might just be me and some hardcore bird watchers on the trip! However, I really enjoyed myself and our... We had joined Encounters on a Dolphin Trip and found out that the boat to see the Albatross the next day, that we was booked on, might not sail due to strong winds. Helpful Encounter staff found out for us that a boat was available to sail later in the day after dolphin watching. We took the opportunity. We had... More

A great trip and our boat captain was extremely knowledgeable regarding seabird species and sub species. Great photo opportunities and I got some great shots. Not a lot about conservation of seabirds, there was some which was informative but feel there should be more.

We weren't sure what to expect on this trip but every part of it was awesome. Very friendly helpful service from everyone and a super informative guide Gary who answered any question in a chatty informal manner but kept everyone engaged. The birds were fabulous and intriguing/ huge/ entertaining bird would arrive one after the other. To top off a... More

I had my first visit to Kaikoura in June this year. As I am an amateur photographer the Albatross Encounter was top of my list as a Must Do - and I definitely was not disappointed. Four of us were booked on the trip - all photographers - and Gary (the Skipper) definitely made sure that our trip had the... More

There are few accesible places in the world where, within minutes of leaving the harbour you can be so thoroughly in the realm of the most majestic of birds. As you travel out on the Albatross Encounter boat, complete with expert skipper/naturalists and baskets of chum, you are quickly joined by Northern Giant Petrels, they tail you to your first...
