The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is a 301km journey from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. This is New Zealand, in all its colour and beauty - from the highest mountain, past great lakes and rivers, down to the ocean. Suitable for all ages, the 9 section trail is an easy to intermediate grade, offering a pleasing mix of on and off-road trails. Allow 4-6 days for the entire ride, or simply try out a day excursion. Whichever option you choose, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is sure to be a memorable experience. Amidst the grandeur of braided rivers, glacier-carved valleys, turquoise hydro-lakes, tussock highlands and rural plains are a host of tantalising off-the-bike activities including wine-tasting, penguin-spotting, glider flights and just quietly soaking in alfresco hot tubs. It's no wonder people come from all over the world to enjoy its stunning vistas, wide open spaces and expansive landscapes. The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is an internationally recognised activity, a great way to experience the diversity of the South Island in less than a week. It's an achievable adventure for almost anyone - from grandchildren to grandparents. With over 150 Official Partner businesses offering trail services, accommodation, dining, activities and more you'll find everything you need to create memories that will last a lifetime.

We have ridden in both road and hybrid bike tours throughout Australia, the Northern Hemisphere and in South Island New Zealand before, so were looking forward to the Alps 2 Ocean trail. We noted it was 'Introductory/Easy' level, so were unprepared to find the tracks to be so rocky, the paths so very narrow, and the route to be so unmarked.... More

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your experience being less than ideal. The first section from Tasman Point to Jollie Carpark is quite rough, as indicated on our official maps which show the trail surfaces, include fitness/skill levels required, and show the route to be taken. We have aimed to have enough signs to find... More

The Alps2Ocean Cycle Trail was I amazing!! I definitely recommend this for all fitness types and all ages. There are a few little harder bits but these are more uphill and distance related (there's nothing stopping you pushing the bike on the uphill and the great thing about this trail is that you can do as much or as little... Hello Kelly P - thank you so much for your super positive review! We're pleased you had such a wonderful experience on the Alps 2 Ocean. It really is an amazing journey isn't it? Stopping to push the bike up a steep hill is a very good idea at times - it gives you a bit of a break and... More

My husband and I did this ride in late April/early May 2016 and found it a great mixture of an active/relaxing holiday. Kept a diary so that I could give people an approximate time value for each day, but unfortunately I left it in my panniers in New Zealand! So please note that the times are approximate and we (read:... More

Thank your for your well-written review. Very thorough and informative! We're pleased you had such a great adventure on the trail. You stayed at some lovely places: Big Sky B&B, Sublime, Kowhai Cottage. The Omarama Hot Tubs are certainly a must do after that long uphill ride from Lake Ohau Lodge. Fenella from Sublime is an amazing chef - lucky... More

Thoroughly enjoyed using the track for three different walks with a friend. Nice to be in a rural setting, quiet and peaceful - then to come upon groups of cyclists using it also is quite unexpected, it is such a wonderful development for the area!

Thank you for your review. You're absolutely right - the A2O is great for either walking or cycling. We just saw a feature about the trail in the May issue of Walking New Zealand magazine. Keep it up! More

Was recently doing a leg of this ride near Omarama when I realised my prior review was entirely unhelpful for those planning to ride it, I hope this helps A quartet of early 50’s blokes with BMI average the wrong side of the recommended and with varied trail cycling ability provide insight into the real level of fitness and cycle... Thank you for your informative review. I'm sure this will help others considering riding the trail to help prepare for what lies ahead. That last section from Duntroon to Oamaru is pretty tough with all the hills. We list it as requiring an intermediate level of fitness. Glad to hear that Cycle Journeys were superb as always. Sounds like you... More

This is an amazing cycle ride, with completely different sights, views and challenges for every stage. Autumn was a stunning time to do it. We biked independently over 5 days, with panniers and cycles hired from Alps 2 Ocean Cycles in Oamaru. All perfectly manageable if you’re reasonably fit and experienced cyclists, and want to do things cost-effectively and in... More

Traveling the Alps 2 Ocean is a top way to spend 6 days enjoying mountains, rivers, lakes, and cycling adventures. I traveled with 32 companions of the Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club, and the trail can be ridden on vintage safety cycles as well as penny farthings quite easily. Long live the A2O!

We cycled this over 6 days with another couple and absolutely loved it. We did all the booking through Cycle Journeys who were great with all the communication and organising. The trail starts at Mt Cook Village and finishes 300km later in Oamaru. The scenery is beautiful. It's well maintained, signposted and varied. If you want a trip along it organised in Style, choose Vertical Ventures of Oamaru.
