Overview
More
Pompallier Mission, where Catholic missionaries translated religious texts into Maori, printed and bound them into beautiful books, was a saintly enclave in the most sinful site of the southern seas. In what is undoubtedly one of the best heritage tours in the country, our passionate guides will take you through the steps of leather and book-making as it was done by courageous pioneers living in this tiny outpost, over 150 years ago. Hear the stories of the lives and times of French missionaries caught up in British Treaty-making and war between Maori and European settlers. Delight in our award winning heritage gardens, take in the wonderful views across the Bay and browse our gift shop for a unique reminder of a special place.

We called in hoping to have a look around but unfortunately it was closed. The coffee shop was open but we had just had lunch so was not interested. Basically cannot comment, except to say it will look great when finished!

We're sorry that you found us CLOSED for essential repairs to the historic building. We are scheduled to re-open in mid May. Our Gift Shop & Coffee House remain OPEN.

Costs $10 to find out a lot about early days of Russell, well worth the spend, didn't realise that the French mission had such an early influence.

This mission was built in 1842 and is situated in an isolated spot on the waterfront. $ 10 is quite a lot for less than one hour you spend in here.

The response depends on where you are coming from. If you are in Pahia there is a regular ferry service across the bay to Russell, and the Pompalier House, as stated above is only minute walk from the ferry wharf.
