Pompallier Mission, where Catholic missionaries translated religious texts...

Pompallier Mission, where Catholic missionaries translated religious texts into Maori, printed and bound them into beautiful books, was a saintly enclave in the most sinful site of the southern seas.

In what is undoubtedly one of the best heritage tours in the country, our passionate guides will take you through the steps of leather and book-making as it was done by courageous pioneers living in this tiny outpost, over 150 years ago.

Hear the stories of the lives and times of French missionaries caught up in British Treaty-making and war between Maori and European settlers.

Delight in our award winning heritage gardens, take in the wonderful views across the Bay and browse our gift shop for a unique reminder of a special place.

The guide is very impressive with her knowledge of everything on site. There are replica of the ancient machinery to show you how tanning and printing were done. If you have to prioritize , do spend enough time at waitangi treaty ground before doing that. We came for this and realized we could have spent the time at waitangi instead.... More

The influence of missionaries on indigenous peoples is often very mixed. However the story told at this historic site is more positive. The admission charge provides you with a tour of printery and tannery which was used by the missionaries. You are taken through the incredible process that occurred to print the books for the Maori people back in the... More

The Mission is an attractive building with an interesting history a short distance from the passenger ferry. For $10 you get a guided tour and hands on examples of printing and tanning from the 19th century. We took the additional option of coffee and croissant at the end for an inclusive cost of $19-50.Well worth it on both accounts, an interesting and... Very informative, minimalist displays, with volunteers answering questions, also content to let you roam alone. Demonstrations available but volunteers are less keen to do these towards the end of the day. Well worth a visit to discover a fascinating dimension to early settler life.

Fab little coffee shop and patisserie attached to this historic attraction. Amazing French pastries, fab coffee and great service, in a relaxed and peaceful setting (on an old- fashioned veranda) overlooking the Bay. Definitely worth the extra few minutes walk.

This is a very well thought out guide to what happened in the processes of tanning and printing in an outpost so far from the industrial revolution. Enthusiastic and informative guide inspired us.
