We got a permit and camped at Koolpin Gorge. The campsite is nothing special, has bush toilets only and no grass but the gorge and the pink and black pools were awesome. We were lucky to come across a young couple to guide us, we wouldn't have got to the top plunge pools without them. More markers would be great.... More

This you must try and do. My wife and I will go here as we will go to Australia this december. For me the fifth, for her a first (newly weds :)). Going to Koolpin Gorge is THE thing we just have to do. I have never ever met an environment with such a huge impact on me. The nature... More

We stayed at Koolpin Gorge just recently, and this is the first time we had been here as you need to arrange a permit to stay here. The drive is a pleasant drive in, once you've picked up your key from the ranger station on Kakadu Hwy head down Gimbat Rd turnoff just nearby. Instead of turning left to Gunlom... More

Koolpin gorge itself is amazing. just look at photos and see the beautiful freshwater pools. ...however finding the the initial path past the first pool, which you aren't allowed to swim in was a slight challenge. You have to really look for signs/markers to point you to the first swimming spot (still looked a bit dodgy). But if you want... More

We went here with Top End Explorer tours. The walk is a bit strenuous, climbing over rocks, but what a reward. It is just beautiful, and the fact that we were the only ones there made it even more special. We were able to relax, swim in the pool and climb up to the lookout.

My husband and I went here with a small tour group in late September 2005 (this choice was not available in the review form), and it was one of the best of many highlights on this trip. We appreciated having a guide to tell us where the safe swimming was, and how to withstand the heat (we wet our shirts... More

We organised a permit early. Locals we spoke to said it can be quite hard to get one. The 17km 4wd track in is very rough (so much fun what an adventure!!!!), and we had a little bit of trouble with the steep water crossing but got up the second try! Extremely secluded, it was so quiet at night that... More

First things first - MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR PERMITS AND KEYS OTHERWISE YOU WON'T BE GOING HERE! Now that you've done that, make sure you allow an extra day at least at Koolpin Gorge as it is magnificent. The track is only marked to the first 3 pools, but after you have explored these, you must continue to follow... More

Amazing place, needs a permit to access...but well worth it...The gorge is rough and a bit spooky, but you are so remote...It's peaceful, outback bliss...Amazing stars at night... PS: make sure your 4wd is all set for anything, as you are miles from the nearest paved road. Highly recommended..
