We have now visited the Casablanca Valley, Aconcagua, Maipo, Maule, Curicó and Colchagua Valley. All our wine tasting was self- planned and organised. You certainly need your own transport, and plan ahead with a designating a driver. Chile has, fortunately, a zero tolerance for drink- driving. It's only about a two hour drive from Santiago to Santa Cruz along the Ruta 5 highway. Once you're in Santa Cruz there are vineyards all around and you get a feel for the Chilean countryside and rural life. One of my favorites is Laura Hartwig for the personal, intimate experience, and Lapostolle for the "wow" architecture.

Colchagua feels a little like Napa 50 years ago. Wineries are coming up fast and furious, but it's not yet overdeveloped or become 'cliché' and over-disneyified.

For those of you who love wine, Chile´s wine country is beautiful. The wineries are all very professional. They offer tours and tastings and have lovely little shops where you can get the wines for bargain prices. This was one of my favorite trips of all time.

These Valleys are considered to produce the finest red wines of Chile, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the area in Chile that initiated the grand history of Chilean wine production, marked by the planting of the first and the finest French varieties by the Pioneer Silvestre Ochagavia, around 1840. Many wineries and some of the best in the country are... More
