This little rural church is a lovely piece of architecture. Photos from its exterior really do not make it justice, as the main attractive is its interior, which is painstakingly covered by beautiful old tiles besides a golden baroque altar. The building itself is quite small but has a real charm, standing out especially in a town like Almancil which... More

We stepped into the foyer and were impressed with the art. Then as we walked further into the church, we were amazed at the blue tiles and alter. Lovely treasure.

A must-see even if you don't normally visit churches. It's worth spending 60c on the leaflet before going in rather than after as I did!

I go now to visit my mum, the graveyard really is beautiful and very different to the UK. The little houses are so much more personal

A small church, about the size of a large room. The walls are totally covered with blue and white tiles, but no photos are allowed. Stick your head in and take a quick look if you're in the area but don't pay the 2 euros charge and don't go out of your way to visit it!

Extraordinary blue tiling, some depicting the poor martyred St Lourenco being roasted alive in an effort to make him recant his faith- he did not. Make the effort to go there. Small entrance fee.

On Christmas day, we went to San Lorenzo for Christmas mass. The church goes back to the 1700's and is tiled completely in blue tiles depicting the story of St. Lawrence. The deacon asked me to read the second reading in English as the mass was said by the priest in Portuguese, English and French. A charming, lovely old church... More
