Guided walk from Amphitheatre backpackers
Mar 2020
A fabulous walk, an adventurous climb leading to the most stunning views. Exciting descent on chain ladders.

Layden, from Ambhitheatre Backpackers was our guide. He was responsible always look out for our safety and then so much fun we had a great laugh and met some lovely, fellow travellers.

Please don't be tempted to do this trek without a guide as there are potential risks and so please keep safe and wear good boots

Sentinel peak is a must for hikers!
Jan 2020 • Couples
The sentinel peak hike takes you from the car park close to Witsieshoek to the top of the amphitheatre, where you can see the Tugela falls and breathtaking views. The hiking trail has been laid out with cement blocks which makes it more accessible and easier to hike. There are 2 chain ladders that you have to conquer to get to the top. An alternative is a gulley which takes about 45 minutes to climb.

Please note the hiking fees is R90 per person. You can pay in cash at the car park, or by card at the Witsieshoek Reception.

A comfortable lodge as close to heaven as you can be
Nov 2017
Very comfortable lodge in the most incredible location in the Drakensberg. A few steps away and you are in a natural wonder that's hard to describe. This is the highest accommodation in the Berg and gives you easy access to this astonishing wilderness area. The lodge is spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable, hot water is plentiful. The food is plain but quite adequate for after a hike or before setting off. The views are spectacular. A short drive away is the entrance to the Amphitheatre ascent - via the chain ladders or the gully. From the lodge itself are some very lovely walks. We went in November and the slopes were covered in beautiful Alpine flowers.

Wonderful surrounds

The Witsieshoek lodge on the edge of the Drakensberg and on the boundary of Kwazulu Natal and the Free State Provinces and on the edge of the Royal Natal Park, has a wonderful view of the Drakensberg and the lower lying Natal.

Beautiful view take time to relax and explore
Mar 2018 • Couples
2nd highest waterfall with incredible views definately worth the walk. Wear a sun hat in summer and 50 factor sun cream or you will get sun stroke/burn. Takes around 3hrs gradual up and 2hr down on average fitness from the carpark. They are putting a permeable path in to stop erosion which is required to protect the mountain. Definately stay at Witsieshoek mountain lodge in a sentinel. You can view the Amphitheatre from your bed and watch the sun rise it is amazing. Take some food and cigarettes for the shepeards, there up there for many months in the storms and unbelievable sun.

This is a must if your visiting drackensberg. Great for a bri with stunning back drops and hiking.
Lots of history if you go on the park tour to see the sand people drawings and Canibal village which you have to drive through to access the park

Great walk
Aug 2017 • Couples
The Sentinel hiking trail is a beautiful hike. You have to pay R45 to enter the gate and another R75 to do the hike. I do not advise to drive up in your rented vehicle to the parking lot. You can't even call it a road, unless you have 4x4. You can park your car at the Witsieshoek hotel and they offer transfer to the parking lot where the trail starts. The signs of the trail are not always well marked, so be aware.

Spectacular scenery and views
Aug 2017 • Couples
We had the greatest hike.
We woke to a very misty morning at Witsieshoek. Thick mist surrounding us. Frost on every plant. -1 degrees celsius.
Games for an entire day was going to make for a very long day so we took our chances, got ready, packed lunch and lots of warm clothes into backpacks and drove up to the carpark (8km from Witsieshoek).
As we got to the car park, we drove out of and above the mist. The Sentinal rose above us with blue sky above us!
We began the hike and the weather only got better - it had snowed the week before so there was quite a bit of snow on the path and on the top of the mountain, but not a breath of wind and very warm sunshine. We went up the chainladders which were easy and safe and had lunch at the Tugela Falls. We looked over into clouds before lunch and after lunch, the valley had cleared so we had the best of both worlds. Absolutely beautiful!

Bucket List Hike
Aug 2017 • Couples
The views are unmatched. This is without doubt an absolute must-do. What a shame that so few South Africans see this wonderful place. Various websites say allow for 4 hours up and 4 hours down, which is a good conservative estimate. If you are a reasonably active person, you will do it in less. Having done it in winter, I would definitely like to do it again in the summer.
