The first period, created by the director Alfred Radok and stage-designer Josef Svoboda began at the world exhibition EXPO 58 in Brussels, Belgium. The programm showed in the Czechoslovak pavilion was named Laterna magika and later gave its name to the theatre in Prague, reconstructed at 1959 after the worldwide success on EXPO.The second period was presented on the EXPO 67 in Montreal, Canada and as well as on the EXPO 70 in Osaka, Japan and with these performances travelled the theatre through the world. In the half of seventieth became Laterna magika the part of the National Theatre in Prague, on the head with the artistic director Josef Svoboda, who was at the beginning of this special medium, which does not use the words, only the combination of film projection and life stage media?s - dance, sound, lights, pantomime, black-theatre e.t.c.There is a basic effort which is creating the face of Laterna magika till today - searching of the way to a specific theatre which is able to narrate a story by using of different themes and medias as well.

Watched "Podivuhodné cesty Julese Verna" and it was unfortunately terrible. The story is pointless, the characters forced, and the gags are not funny. It seems somewhat outdated. Admittedly I was relying on the less than complete English captions, but even so, it wasn't the least...More

It's childish but NOT appropriate for children. It was wird, actually, it was disturbing. Don't bother considering it as an adult. Children think it's funny but the sexual innuendoes aren't age appropriate.

Learning that Laterna Magica is a special theatre in Prague, we decided to see the Extraordinary Voyages of Jules Verne. We numbly watched the first 10 mins and could not decide whether it was deliberately so weak. Stupid gags, hardly translated text, woeful ideas. We...More

Laterna Magika was one of the big hits of Expo 67 which took place in Montreal in 1967. So I was looking to see it again and also to see how much it had "advanced". the show I saw was a cocktail of the best...More

This place is not for the theater snobbish and for sure this also not for Boadway theater or Moulin Rouge cabaret fans. I would say that this place has its own character. They kept the tradition from the era of Socialism, it is so pure...More

We could not wait for the interval, I'm sorry to say so that we could leave. The show revolved around a cinema screen projected onto the stage curtain with the characters going to and from the film to reality. It was clever the first time...

The director took the name of Jules Verne in vain. In addition, there were racist and anti-Semitic words expressed in the show that were not properly translated into English. Referring to Sergei Eisenstein for no reason as the "Jew-boy" was totally unnecessary. The amateurish handling...More

This performance was my wife's Valentine's Day treat this year. She's a dancer herself, and very much appreciated the level of skill displayed, and the beautiful choreography. The story revolved around the dramatic life of Edward Muybridge. We particularly enjoyed the (human) horses and the...More

Well, I have seen dozens of dance troupes and multi-media art events over the years,so I am not a novice. I saw the Cocktail show, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It included pieces from 1995 onwards. I found it visually stimulating; quite psychedelic in parts, and...More

Few years ago, the Laterna Magika show in Prague was very new. But now it's look like more boring and you can miss it. But the building is still very beautiful. Walk on Narodni from Mustek to the river and enjoy it.
