A place where technical heritage and nature tell many great stories…Behind the gates of a former Carthusian monastery you can find Slovenia’s largest museum – The Technical Museum of Slovenia. It is located in the most beautiful natural surroundings on the outskirts of Ljubljana. Several collections can be seen in the museum: from forestry, woodworking, hunting, fishing and agricultural departments, to textiles, printing, traffic and electrical engineering. The attention of most visitors is drawn towards the water-driven elements -the flour mill, blacksmith’s workshop, fulling mill and veneer sawmill. Road vehicle fans won’t be disappointed either. They can admire the oldest surviving car from Slovenia or enjoy the sight of the limousines that once belonged to President Tito, Premier of former Yugoslavia. Apart from the guided tour in Slovene, English, Italian and German languages through the museum collections, visitors can also attend several workshops and demonstrations, through which they can truly experience the technical spirit of the past. With prior arrangement, we can organize workshops and demonstrations for groups outside of our schedule. In addition to the permanent collection, you can also visit some temporary exhibitions. Museum’s opening hours:Tuesday - Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (July and August: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) Saturdays: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.Sundays and holidays: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.Mondays: closed. From 4th December until 1 March the museum is closed for visitors (except for groups announced in advance) due to unheated rooms.

Technical museum is opened again with fresh permanent and some temporary exhibitions. Interesting presentation is dedicated to Elan factory, mainly known with skis of all kinds. Rich permanent collection starts and ends with cars of all kinds. Farmers can admire tractors. You can join workers in a forest. Some dust is on the hunter’s collection – it needs new ideas.... Bistra was an old Carthusian monastery with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Architecture and gardens near the sources of Ljubljanica are preserved. They need some repair and fresh paint but general impression is romantic. You will have opportunity to look at different collections, from sewing machines to forestry, blacksmith and more. The best collection are cars, some of them were... More

It was a rainy day, so we planned this visit, arriving at 11am thinking we would be there maybe 3 hours according to other reviews. We were one of the last to leave at 5pm, and still missed the last part of the exhibition. We had to pop out to our motor home to walk our dog half way through... More

This museum doesn't get a very high rating on Ljubljana Interesting Places but it's not in Ljubljana so if one did not have a car, it would be more challenging to get to. There's a very reasonable admission charge. Then one starts (and finishes) in cars. There's an established route through the old Carthusian Monastery on lovely grounds well posted... More

The Cartusian monastery offers beautiful settings to one of the most interesting exhibitions in Slovenia. Foundec in 1220, houses Tito's private car collection and Tomos, Slovenian motorbike maker complete collection of motorcycles. Amongst other things.

interesting museum in an old convent. I loved the castle like building and park even more! Nice place to spend some time in the nature. There is also a trail going to the woods just near the historical building. Watc out for stron springs, which are some of many Ljubljanica springs.
