National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institution in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia, assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vače.

The museum was easy to find the staff were friendly. The exhibits were beautifully presented with English translations. The natural history museum is contained within the same building. We got tickets for both and it was very good value. Overall I highly recommend it.

Behind the Parliament building, this museum shares a building with the Natural History Museum. On our visit, a temporary exhibit of ancient musical instruments was on display. It was an excellent and interesting presentation. The permanent collection is also interesting, if small. The highlight of...More

The National Museum has an interesting collection, well presented. But I was blown away by Archeomusica - a temporary display lasting to Sept. 24, 2107 dealing with the origins and evolutions of musical instruments. It had lots of interactive stuff - like musical stones one...More
