Built in the first half of the nineteenth century, the largest cathedral in Hungary incorporates the red marble Rakocz Chapel, a fine example of Renaissance art.

Esztergom is the traditional ecclesiastical capital of Hungary - think Canterbury for England or Armagh for Ireland. It's a small town and most visitors from outside Hungary will be there because their tour stopped for the day. Fortunately it's easy to get the best out of it in that time: you just have to go up the hill. There are... More

Worth the trip to Esztergom, which takes a little over an hour by train and is inexpensive. It's quite a long hike up the hill to the Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, and so worth finding the lift to help you up. A combined ticket to see the Basilica, the Treasury and the Dome is worth it, but not... More

A very nice city in general and this particular basilica is a must see. You can go inside on a very top and get an astonishing view, overlook Slovakia and beautiful Duna river. Definitely worth a visit.

The Basilica is such a beautiful part of the Catholic Religion! You should see it if you are around the area, even if you have different believes. But do not forget to wear comfy shoes, and even if you get tired, do not give up, at the end you will have such an amazing view, you will forget any pain... More

The basilica is a huge building built in a classicistic style. The construction began in 1822 and was completed in 1856. It was built on the foundations of several old buildings. In the basilica there is a famous organ with huge organ pipes. Listening to an organ concert in the basilica is a remarkable event. I recommand it to everybody.

Art on walls and ceilings is spectacular. The size reminds me of the pantheon in Rome. If you have some spare time then visit. Not in top of list.

Esztergom Basilica on Castle Hill is a breathtaking structure seen from many different angles, including a superb view from the River Danube if you happen to be on a boat trip (which would be recommended if you get a chance) Its the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary, and with the Castle next door, plus a historical area below...
