What a brave and compassionate man!

Particularly poignant as the UK rejects refugees and embraces Brexit. This was the home of the Japanese Vice-consul during WW2. Despite being told not to do so by his superiors he wrote visas for Polish and Lithuanian Jews which allowed them to escape the Nazi bloodbath via the Soviet Union to Japan from where they were free to travel wherever... We never heard something about this great person. We followed a guide who tell us the story and at the end he suggested us to see the picture - do not forgot to see this. Saving so much lifes and so unknown.

The Sugihara House is a small museum located in a quiet hilltop residential neighborhood of Kaunas. If you like history, are interested in learning about the life of a humble man who helped many people, and have some extra time in Kaunas to visit, I highly recommend. The guides are informative and will answer all questions.

The museum itself is not much, but the story behind it is amazing !! It is the stir of one man that saved the lives of over 6000 people. In 1940 Ch.Sugihara was the vice consul at the Japenese Consulate in Kaunus,Lithuania . He issued travel visas to Polish Jews to escape persecution and enable them to travel to Vladivostok ,then... We turned right out of the station and climbed the steps up through the trees which was great for the view, but on reaching the house, we got a worldwide perspective that placed a house in Kaunas central to a complicated escape that saved the lives of 6000 Jews. Many of them who found their way to the house, as... More

I extended my trip to Finland/Estonia a few days to visit this museum in Lithuania. You learn not only about Diplomat Sugihara but also the less famous part of WWII in this small country. Along with their Soviet time, I felt the pain the Lithuanian people went through. This museum made me want to learn more about the history of... More

Very interesting background story. The house is located in a secluded community and finding it was an adventure on it's own. The guide, a poli-sci major, was very enthusiastic and you can tell he really enjoyed his job of explaining the story of Sugihara which added to the visit. Watched the documentary movies which made the small museum much more... More

This is famous for a Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. During World War II, he helped several thousand Jews leave the country by issuing transit visas to Jewish refugees so that they could escape from Germany, risking his career and his family's lives. As a result, he was deprived of his position of the diplomat and The Japanese Foreign Ministry did... More

This is on my list of MUST in Kaunas ! Very important and inspiring story. The Lithuanian official government (or anyway, some of the authorities) is that he saved many people, a kind of a Lithuanian hero. They just forget, that he was a Japanese, and that he helped the Jews to run away, mainly from the local Lithuanian mob...... More
