More
Built in the place of the former mosque after the conquest by Dom Paio Peres Correia, it goes up to the XIII century. After the 1755 earthquake it was rebuilt by the bishop Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar. The façade presents neo-classic pilasters, splitting in the central cloth the gothic doorway with four archivolts containing vegetarian chapiters, remains of the original building. The inner part, a Latin cross longitudinal plant, has got three naves with lateral chapels, especially the «Senhor dos Passos» (Manueline Art) and a place of honour divided into three parts. The Chancel has got in its lateral walls the tombs of Dom Paio Peres Correia and the seven knights killed by the Moors. The collateral chapel of the Gospel keeps a gothic arch that relies on columns with vegetarian chapiters. The Santa Maria Church has been classified as a National monument by a June 1910 decree.

Lovely white old church which has been well maintained. Has steps to the bell tower which has great views over Tavira old town and the salt pans in the distance.

Beautiful, old Catholic church. Stunning view from the bell tower. 2€ 50 for the both. A must whilst you're in Tavira. Top tip... sensible shoes, quite steep steps to the top.

OK it's 2.5Eu to enter (which I have a problem with given the disproportionate distribution of the riches of the Catholic church) but you do get a small museum and the bell tower thrown in, and some lovely views

It's a steep but enjoyable walk up through the old streets to this church high above the town. Unfortunately it was about to close when we arrived at 4.55, so we had to be satisfied with a stroll around the peaceful and beautiful environs of...More

Visiting churches should be free of charge - why are locals extorting money from tourists? The view from the bell tower was good which is something different but the rest of the church was pretty ordinary

The church is situated just below the main church on the top of the Castle hill. You must be very interested in churches to find something interesting about this church

A nice church with a beautiful manueline chapel and a gorgeous view from its tower. The museum can be skipped, as it presents nothing interesting and requires extra payment. The church and the tower are worth it, though.

It is central and an easy walk. It is worth the view from the bell tower and they also have an exhibition in part of the church.

climb the steps to admire the church and enjoy the wonderful views over Tavira. There was a wedding being set up in the grounds whilst we were there so that even added to the prettiness of the place.
