This place has a lot to do with my history. So this place has very deep meaning for me as it is of my ancestors . Very cool place. Because of this place I was able to meet family members.

Interesting place

This museum has much of interest including a comprehensive display of the whaling history in the area. We were in picton for captain cook's 250th centenary celebrations but the museum failed to mention this auspicious occasion or have a special display for it. There was no children's area but my granddaughter enjoyed the pioneer life area without getting bored.

The museum actually closes at 4pm - missed it...might be a good idea to update the page. It looked very interesting from the outside

Unusual and varied exhibits from whaling to Maori culture and early settlement
Dec 2019
We were greeted by a lovely staff member, who encouraged us to take photos of anything except the photographs, and was happy to answer questions. An interesting little museum with some fascinating and unusual items on display.

Brilliant

A small museum, think I paid or donated $5 and it was well worth it.
The stories and photos detailed about whaling were captivating and fascinating.
The exhibits were numerous considering it's small size.
I probably spent an hour inside and well worth it

Story of Picton
Sep 2018 • Couples
We visited on a windy off-season afternoon and were captivated by the exhibits and stories about local inhabitants of Picton. If you are interested in personal stories and historical events in a small town, this is the place to go. Very small entrance fee and it is run and supported by volunteers who couldn't have been more helpful..

Wonderful Surprise
Sep 2018 • Family
We were totally enchanted by this museum. Full of history and exhibits you can get close to. Delights around every corner.
No EFTPOS (cash only) but ATM 2mins away. At only $12 for family for 4 we were happy to spend a raining afternoon here.
We will definately be back next tine we are in Picton.

Don't miss visiting the Museum of New Zealand!

This museum is a six story treasure box built in1998. It combined the former National Museum and the National Art Gallery collections. You can take an elevator to visit the floors you are interested in. I learned so much while I was there!

great support by volunteers

I am not into museums but I stayed here for over two hours. A search service is provided if you want more information. The volunteers were locals with a genuine care to help. Thank you!
