We last drove this 17 years ago when it was an isolated wilderness. Rather disappointed that now there are bits of development all the way through including restaurants - before there was only the sheep mountain lodge. However the scenery before and after sheep mountain is as stunning as before - a swarm of vast interlocking mountains with glaciers and... More

I drove the Glenn Highway in Alaska on September 7, 2016. The drive is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever taken. The fall colors were amazing and made the mountains creeks, rivers and glaciers even more stunning. I highly recommend that you rent a car and take this drive while you are in Alaska. You will be... We drove the Glenn Highway from Glennallen to Anchorage. The eastern part was not very interesting; there were mountains in the distance but they were hard to see because it was a cloudy day. The view became more scenic around Mendeltna and Nelchina where we could see views of Nelchina Glacier. We stopped at Long Rifle Lodge for lunch and... More

My apologies to the some of the reviewers below but after driving the Glenn highway last week I completely disagree with the negative comments. My guess is they live in a major city and have never driven on a 2 lane hwy before. We almost decided against this drive because the reviews make it sound like the road is dangerous.... More

I had seen photos, heard good things, read reviews, so when in Rome . . . . We took the drive from Anchorage to Glennallen and back. What I will say is that there are places that are beautiful. However, the very narrow two lane highway with no shoulder or guardrails is an average modesty maintained mountain highway. The locals... More

We drove from Valdez to Anchorage in early September and the leaves were near fall peak in this area. An explosion of yellow color with an occasional sprinkle of red/orange awaited us. It was truly spectacular. We even changed drivers and backtracked through the Matanuska section about 20 miles so that everyone could enjoy. One of the many highlights of... More

A great drive (whichever way you do it!). Spend time looking for moose by the side of the road - and don't forget the numerous glaciers on the way!

Note: This road is 179 miles long, going from Anchorage to the junction of the Richardson Highway in Glennallen. This road does NOT go from Seward. You can drive the 120 mile Seward Highway from Seward to Anchorage (gorgeous!) and then connect up to the Glenn. We drove the Glenn Highway last year in July and this year in June.... More

We took Glenn Hwy from Anchorage to Seward. This is something you must do. There are a lot of beautiful spots along the way to stop and take pictures. Try to take this hwy on a sunny morning or afternoon. All the beauty of nature that we saw really inspired me. It reminded me how precious the life is.
