Easy to orient, with a very nice collection of portraits and pics. The line of portraits of American indians and rooms of American presidents are amazing. Admission is free, but you can donate if you want.

A lovely gallery with some surprising works. Fantastic well spaced collection with a great collection of ex presidents. I loved the President "Spacey" portrait by the lift on the grounD FlOOR? Netflix must love that. It is very good but then so are the Kennedy Clinton and Regan portraits. Well worth a look.

We have visited the Portrait Gallery several times and have enjoyed it each time (although I was disappointed to find the presidents' gallery to be closed last week). It's enjoyable to see portraits of real - and usually important - people. Access is very convenient via the Metro. If you also want to visit the SAAM, be sure to visit... More

I love this museum. They usually have wonderful special exhibits. They are also one of the few museums with a 7:00 pm closing time which makes it a choice for a late afternoon visit. The docents are great and the security lines are not as long. If you love art take the time to see their special exhibits.

My spouse and I have visited this site several times and always enjoy returning. The only disappointment this weekend was the fact that the Presidents Gallery was closed for renovation. Our favorite section is the one that displays early American portraits. And Impressionism always is a joy. There are at least two wonderful large paintings by Sargent, one of which... More

We came specifically for the presidential portraits and were disappointed to find it closed. Still enjoyed the civil war portraits as well as the folk art on the first floor. Specifically enjoyed the portrait of Lincoln that was designed using the words of the Emancipation Proclamation and Grandma Moses. The 3rd floor art was a little too modern and questionable... More

My daughter and I LOVED this gallery. Each picture has the story of the person next to it. The portraits are amazing and the stories are interesting. I learned so much. I could spend days in here. This is a must see. The presidential portrait gallery is closed for renovation-total bummer!

The national portrait gallery is a restful place where one can get to see a wide range of portraits and a good collection of oils and pictures more generally. It is not as crowded as many of the other attractions on the Mall and can be a good respite from the busier venues - though kids will likely be bored... More

Nice museum, some interesting art, wish i had more insightful things to say about the actual pieces but I'm drawing a blank (HAH! had to). Notables: - The no food and drink rule: you can technically have food or drink in your bag/ purse/ backpack but not in plain sight or while consuming. So make sure to hide those water... More
