The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

We arranged a tour through our US Senator's office a couple months advance. It was fairly easy to find the visitors entrance and we were quickly directed to the line for pre-arranged tours. Within 15 minutes of our arrival, we were escorted to a small...More

I liked the chance to view the capital building but the tour was a joke in my opinion. You watch a 10 minute movie where I think I learned more in the movie than the guide told me. After the movie there is maybe a...More

The best way to experience American politics. Do the guided tour and make sure you contact your congressman or senator to get tickets to the gallery-especially if its in session. Politicans are Rock Stars in D.C.

We did not book anything, just arrived and actually no queue apart from the security, which is of course everywhere. Really well organised too. We found that we could have a free tour, and actually only waited about 10 minutes. It was really interesting and...More

Not the same to see it on TV and documentaries than to witness this place in person to admire the history and architecture.

Given they say they can and do have 10,000 guests a day for the tour it is impressive how well organized it all is. Our guide, Hal, took us around for what is in reality a very short tour - too short really. The introductory...More

We took the guided tour (Free). We had reservations through our congress person, but you don't really need one. The tour lasted about an hour.

Hi Nancy, The tough part is that AID airport is much further away from the city than Regan airport. I didn't book tours, but made my own plans. You definitely have time to do something, but you need to prioritize what you... More

The one through your congressman is given by one of the congressman's staffers and in much smaller groups. We saw much more of the capital and could ask questions. In the one you book online is the public capital tour and... More

I would arrive at 8:00am. Try to get the tour for the Senators and Congressional Gallery also from their office building. It is well worth it. The difference between the public and private tours is the line you stand in... More
