For us being neophytes to DC we took a Segway Tour which takes about three hours. The tour gives you a good overview of DC takes in the highlights of all the venues including the National Mall, Capital Building, Pennsylvania Ave and White House. The only thing is although you make a stop at each one and get an explanation, there is not enough time on the tour to go inside any of the buildings. A caveat here is the weather. A good alternate would be is to take one of the bus tours, again they range in time from two to four hours. As far as a one time visit where you are concentrated in one area, my choice would be the Capitol Building. It is a fascinating place and if you ask at your local congressman office you can get gallery passes for the Senate and House of Representatives where you can watch your tax dollars at work. My impression of the Capital Building is the heart of America and a place where big things happen that affect our country. If you have any extra time, the Library of Congress is right across the street and if it suits you, you can get a library card from there that is free and good for one year and then renewable. With the card you can get into the restricted research area. Frankly you can't do DC in one week let alone a few hours. We were there a week and spent six to eight hours a day exploring and ran out of time and energy. We still missed the Washington Monument, FBI, Secret Service, Arlington National Cemetery and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Virginia where most of the aircraft are located including the Space Shuttle. Have a great time. Bottom line here is that all the attractions are interesting and you won't go wrong visiting any of them. Glad I could help. I would be interested in your choices and if you enjoyed them.
