Taking a drive to 12,000' sound fun? That is what you will get with this route. GO SLOW! There are plenty of places to drive off a 1000-2000' cliff so have a designated driver who is not looking at anything but the road. Snow fall...More

A walk around the top of the pass is breathtaking in more ways than one. The altitude may be a problem for some, but the alpine environment and various alpine flora are beautiful.

Al Naturale! Perfect time of the year to contemplate nature’s seasonal changes and explore the mountains landscape before the snow fall accumulates. Observe wild life getting ready to hunker down for the heavy winter months. Travel light and pack for extreme weather conditions when exploring...More

Cross the continental divide driving yourself. I remember a well-maintained dirt/gravel road. Do not hurry! Stop frequently. Take lunch and water -- you are out in the wilderness after leaving the towns at each end. Turn off the phone (it won't work anyway).

We took Independence Pass to get to Aspen and it was well worth the drive. The views were spectacular with significant drop offs at points. Drive slowly and follow the road signs. Take your time and enjoy the ride!

Been over this pass a few times. Its always a great view. Road is a little scary driving down into Aspen when it becomes a 1 1/2 lane.

My husband and I had the opportunity of traveling Independence Pass before closure for the winter. We were thrilled and would do it again if the opportunity presents itself. Beautiful, beautiful sights!

We ended up drive Independence Pass pretty much by accident, this was the way our GPS took us! What a fabulous surprise it was. However, there was some snow on the road in a few areas which made it interesting at times. Once at the...More

I would give yourself a couple of hours to go from Leadville, through Twin Lakes to Aspen, especially if you want adequate time for some photo stops. It is a beautiful route and there is no reason to hurry. But you may need... More

Yes, you can drive from Leadville through Independence Pass. It's the route we took last year. As others have pointed out, the pass doesn't usually open until late May. But your trip in July should be fine.
