If there is one must do in Colorado, this would be it! The drive is absolutely amazing! There are multiple areas where you can pull off and take pictures. You also cross over the continental divide which is pretty cool. A definite must!

Absolutely drive this pass. Just drive it slowly, with great care and attention - Instagram will keep. Try to be patient with your passenger when they seem tempted to grip the dashboard or the seat - it's *really* not you, it's the precipitous thousand foot...More

Fall is a great time to wind your way here. If you enjoy the changing colors and windy mountain roads this is for you. Wear layers!

Drove over Indy Pass in early September maybe just a little too early for the full fall colours but still saw some. The view from the top is great and you are crossing one of the highest roads in the USA. Be aware of altitude...More

Plenty of pull outs to see the valley and streams. Great ride from Vail to Aspen. Presently the bridge is out north of Aspen at rts 82 & 70. Traffic was horrendous near 70. I should have returned via the pass. Sept 2017

John and I were traveling from Vail to Aspen in mid September! The Aspens were changing, the air was cool, but lovely, it wasn't crowded! Perfect, amazing, don't miss it!

Even though the leaves weren't at their peak, the drive was still spectacular and well worth the detour. A must do for all Colorado natives and visitors.

Driving through independence pass has turned out to be one of my favorite drives. I'm never disappointed by the beautiful scenery. Tip: when driving through any mountain range and several cars are behind you and you're first in line pull over and let the faster...More

Not for the faint of heart... Going to Aspen is Bit easier b/c you are actually hugging the mountain. The road is narrow, the views are spectacular and it might be a little...just a little shorter than the interstate. But... Leaving Aspen, heading down, back...More

Be prepared to keep your eyes peeled to the road while your passengers admire the breathtaking scenery. A true moutain pass, the road narrows at points and you need to make sure you allow room for oncoming traffic. That being said, once you reach the...More

I would give yourself a couple of hours to go from Leadville, through Twin Lakes to Aspen, especially if you want adequate time for some photo stops. It is a beautiful route and there is no reason to hurry. But you may need... More

Yes, you can drive from Leadville through Independence Pass. It's the route we took last year. As others have pointed out, the pass doesn't usually open until late May. But your trip in July should be fine.
