You get to be on top above 12k feet above. It was a wonderful experience. I even found a snow patch on the top in mid august. The 360 degree view are really cool. Step out and enjoy.

Great view at the top of the pass. Includes informational signs, a rest areas, several hiking trails of various abilities. I was hit with altitude sickness, but still wanted to see the views. Be prepared for close turns and blind hairpins. Saw an adolescent bear...More

The scenery is spectacular. The road is narrow and extremely busy. Lots of pull offs and parks to stop and hike. Stop at the grotto and see the ice caves. Make sure you stop at the top too. This drive is worth the effort.

Closed 8 months of the year - worth the drive when open. There are some scary looking drop offs for passengers but ok to drive - just pay attention to road!! Sorry no pics as I was driving.

The drive up to Independence pass was very scenic and the view of the Continental Divide was breathtaking. Be prepared for the high altitude. There are restrooms at the top. This drive was one of the highlights of our trip. Make sure you don't miss...More

I recommend this to all nature lovers. Do not hesitate to stop your car and go for different trails. You could spend 2 days visiting the area. We even found a snow spot at the top in august... the kids loved it.

Awesome views along the way and at the top. The road can get a little thin in places on the Aspen side, but the scenery is beautiful.

I would give yourself a couple of hours to go from Leadville, through Twin Lakes to Aspen, especially if you want adequate time for some photo stops. It is a beautiful route and there is no reason to hurry. But you may need... More

Yes, you can drive from Leadville through Independence Pass. It's the route we took last year. As others have pointed out, the pass doesn't usually open until late May. But your trip in July should be fine.
