This pass is 11,500 feet, between Leadville and Aspen, open only in summer months, has restrooms, a reasonable amount of parking, and paved short trails across an alpine meadow to some overlooks. It is the best pass in Colorado overall, though it is easily topped...More

An amazingly beautiful road to the Aspen. This stop has an easy hike to look around. But if you want to take incredible pictures of the highway, the best places are the vista points before the Independence Pass.

This is a must if you are traveling to Aspen in summer. The quintessential Rocky Mountain drive. If you are not a local this drive is not for the faint of heart. Bring your camera and hang on! Gorgeous!

We drove from Aspen to Canyon City through Independence Pass in September. There was a freak snowstorm dropping a huge amount of snow. The drive over the pass was extra thrilling with drifting snow, low visibility at times and the shear drop off the side...More

The drive over Independence Pass is amazing. The landscape is largely untouched and absolutely stunning. It is only open in the summer months due to inability to clear snow. The pass is so majestic and there are hiking trails to experience and you can ski...More

Taking a drive to 12,000' sound fun? That is what you will get with this route. GO SLOW! There are plenty of places to drive off a 1000-2000' cliff so have a designated driver who is not looking at anything but the road. Snow fall...More

A walk around the top of the pass is breathtaking in more ways than one. The altitude may be a problem for some, but the alpine environment and various alpine flora are beautiful.

Yes, you can drive from Leadville through Independence Pass. It's the route we took last year. As others have pointed out, the pass doesn't usually open until late May. But your trip in July should be fine.
